Chapter Text
An explosion ripped through the silence of the woodland area. Trees shaking with the force of the blast and all animal life leaving the area. All life apart from 4 boys. Bakugou and his gang stood around the smaller form of little Midoria Izuku. Even if an adult had heard they wouldn’t have investigated, Bakugou was a good boy after all. It was Midoria you needed to watch out for.
Midoriya was an odd kid.
Everyone knew it, after all if a kid like Bakugou was against him then he had to be odd. Probably even bad. Sure the little kid was always polite, and always ahead in school, and yeah his lowest test score was a 94/100. But the kid was odd, bad, he just had to be.
His quirk was practically useless as well. Oh yes, worthless little Deku had a quirk, water and plant manipulation. He could fill hours discussing the intricate nature of what he could do with water….as long as he had enough of it. Never mind only barely getting flowers to bloom. Which was what ultimately made him useless in Bakugou’s eyes. What use was his quirk when not next to a river?
Which was how Midoriya ended up in this position in the first place, on the floor, with his arm bent at an unnatural angle and being held down ready for another attack. His teeth digging into his own cheek to try and curb the pain.
Bakugou stood above him with a low smirk on his otherwise angelic face. Grinning at the blotchy bruises forming across the green haired boys arms, and the very broken looking right leg. Those bright green eyes still stared up unwaveringly at him despite the tears bubbling down his chubby cheeks. Even the useless boys quirk seemed to have given up, the water having returned to the river beside them long since defeated. Yet still those eyes burned bright.
Pathetic.
“Hope you get a better quirk in the next life you damn nerd!” Bakugou growled out as he lit up yet another explosion, this one just millimetres from Midoria’s crying face. The sickening crunch forcing a deep full bodied laugh from the blonde boys mouth. The blood that spurted onto the ground like some twisted halo stopped the laughter dead in it’s tracks.
The smoke cleared to reveal a sickening hole in Midoriya’s jaw -no the whole left side of his face! Even his arm was hanging off, the entire shoulder joint reduced to a congealed mush. Not even the chest moved as the other boys watched desperately for any signs of him breathing. Those green eyes were finally shut.
“Run! We, we just need to go, pretend nothing happened you hear me? Damn Deku ran off on his own! Got it!” Bakugou managed to grind out, turning his burning glare on his friends. His thoughts stuck on the worst case scenario. He wasn’t stupid not like Deku, he knew his dream of heroics was over if anyone saw this. Golden child or not this was a step too far. He wasn’t about to let a useless Deku ruin his dream. So he had to make sure it never got out.
“Y-yeah good idea man!” The three ten year olds turned and ran away from the river bank, the mud, the park and the little green haired boy all of them had once called friend.
Perhaps if they had stayed, just for a second longer, they may have seen the water of the river break its banks once more in answer to Midoria’s call. The cool water flowing till it covered his body completely, glittering too brightly for the few patches of light that made their way through the dense trees above.
It was only seconds but it still happened all too slowly, the jaw, and left side of Midoria’s face began to regrow, heal almost perfectly. While his arm twitched uncontrollably while the muscles and sinews built back up to reattach it to the main body. Within the span of 20seconds the boy was completely healed, even the scrapes on his knees were gone. His bright green eyes sparkling once more as they opened to the water once more receding to its natural home. His chest rising and falling to take in grateful lungfuls of air.
“B-but I… I died…didn’t I?” Izuku had barely finished speaking before his eyes met the water streaming back to the river, the cogs starting to whir inside his mind. He knew only one thing for sure: he was going to need a brand new note book. The rest was lost in a haze of wondering if this Bakugou was anything like the Kacchan he had known. The last pieces of his rose tinted glasses fell away under this new weight of evidence. He had long since accepted Bakugou was a bully, but there was a huge gulf between bully and abuser. It wasn’t something he wanted to dwell on.
It only took a few minutes of searching to find his backpack slung into a tree, no doubt Ito’s doing. Midoriya had just about resigned himself to climbing up the tree when it seemed to bend towards him, the bag falling neatly into his arms.
“T-thank you.” Midoriya wasn’t entirely sure why he thanked a tree, especially when the light tingling sensation bubbling away under his skin told him he had done that. He put it all down to the weirdest day in history. Even the thrill of buying a brand new 600 page notebook and a set of new black ink pens did little to calm his raging nerves.
It was hours later, after a tense meal where Inko asked after Bakugou, wondering why he wasn’t coming around as often, that he was finally able to open the notebook to the first page. It was thicker than all his other notebooks, and was about twice as heavy as them too, but he still couldn’t shake the thoughts that it was too small for what he needed. Yet still, he had to start somewhere. He could get more later, now he had to write. So with a deep sigh he picked up one of the new pens and begun to write. Neatly noting the date at the top right of the page.

Name: Midoriya Izuku
Age: 10
Quirk: Hydrophyte
Basics: Hydrophyte is a dual qurik, allowing the user to manipulate plants and water, named after a class of plants who grow specifically on or in water.
First Self-Assessment Basics:
- The user can manipulate and control any water in the vicinity
- The user is currently unable to create water
- The manipulation of water exceeds its usual bounds for example, lifting, pushing, grappling, floating, throwing etc.
- The user can apparently use water to heal, this currently seems involuntary. Studies need to be done on the full extent of this, thus far it has healed; a broken leg, exploded skull and shoulder, and minor abrasions.
- The more water being manipulated the more mental strain. The amount has increased over the years, and it becomes easier to use as the user ages.
- The user can also make flowers bloom around him.
- On one occasion after the incident, the user was able to manipulate a tree to bend into the ground to return stolen items.
- This may be a secondary aspect to water manipulation as plants and flowers can be up to 95% water by weight.
Max specifications:
- The user can manipulate 26 gallons of water without blacking out. Potentially elevated due to the incident.
- 10 gallons is the comfortable amount for the user to manipulate. Though this may have increased after the incident, calculations suggest much more water was used to heal, see observations below
- 20 gallons can shove or lift the weight of 100kg
- 10 gallons can restrain a 52kg weight
- 3 metre radius for plants blooming
Observations:
- The injuries sustained during the incident were healed when the water covered the whole body and areas in need of healing.
- The surface area of an adult man on average is 1.9 m2, due to height, age and only the front half being covered, but the water being at lest 2 inches thick all around the body a conservative estimate is 0.5 m2, according to an online converter this equates to 93 gallons.
- No scars are left on the users body even ones long healed, this needs further checking.
- The user went from barely making flowers bloom, to getting one of the tallest trees to bend almost in half with barely a thought.
Questions and Improvements:
- Check the maximum gallon usage and try to increase it further
- Increase the weights and reduce gallons needed
- Increase fine motor control with water
- Test if plant manipulation can also be used similarly to water.
- Work with a fighting style that can be effective outside of quirk use
- Find the limits of the healing and try to lower water needed.
- Test weather plant manipulation is secondary or true duality.
- Test movement and creation of both elements.
- Test the limits of healing for example; could it be used to improve muscle growth, or to repair neurones and pathways in the brain to aid memory?

Izuku glanced at the page a small smile creeping its way across his face. He had filled four pages with his knowledge, expanding further on ideas on how to expand and ways it could be utilised. On the next clean page he took a few moments to sketch out a semi realistic drawing of himself, giving it just as much attention as the ones of hero’s in his other notebooks. He nodded as he finished it, before turning the page once more and signing the date at the top with the title ‘Experiments’.
He took the kitchen knife he had hidden in his school bag and twirled it in his hand, the water bottle already sat on the desk. A small huff left him as he dragged the blade across the palm of his hand, desperately trying not to make any noise. The knife clattered to the desk as he grabbed at the already open water bottle. Pouring the water over his hand and concentrating on the tingling feeling he had felt just hours before. Just as it had then the water glittered unnaturally in the dimly lit room. Covering the cut like a bandage, and within seconds any evidence of it was gone all together. The water easily accepting being coaxed back into the water bottle.
That…was… too much. His quirk wasn’t this…not ever… in the years he’d tried to make it something more, something to prove he wasn’t useless… but there was a traitorous part of him that knew what was going on even if it made no sense. Quirk evolutions weren’t even taught in schools anymore they were so rare. Izuku had only heard of them due to an analysis board which suggested that was how All Might was so powerful.
He attempted again, biting back a hiss as he dug the blade deeper only for it once again to be perfectly healed. Only a fuzzy floaty feeling at the edges of his consciousness showing something happened.
It was as if a light was flipped in his head, and suddenly he was filling out page after page thinking of all the applications, how much water he needed, what else could he do, what other applications could he use this for? Wait...a second bulb lit up and his jaw dropped to his chest and eyes widened at the thought.
Noting down the experiments he started to think and plan, first off how to build muscle and that was worrying in and of to self... muscle building was ripping your muscles, and your body healing across the Rip thereby making them bigger. The thought honestly terrified the poor boy, if that was really all muscle building was, then he should be able to do it easily. Too easily. A small smirk spread across his young face...he was going to have fun with this.
First long term experiment: His exercise routine. he managed 20 reps of weights in each way on an average day, 20 push ups and 15 squats...if he pushed him self. Let’s see how far he could go now? With the experiment sheet created he began. Making a note to himself to make sure there was water nearby.
