“And I appreciate that, but I’m too in my head now about this and I probably won’t calm down until someone with a bunch of letters behind their name tells me she’s fine.”
Harris chuckled again, “Have you told Ilya anything about this?”
”Harris, I need you to be so serious right now. Did you or did you not have to convince him that Dr. Dolittle was fictional when he first adopted Anya because he wanted ‘only the best for his perfect princess’?” Harris couldn’t help letting out a booming laugh at that. “When he left he gave me two goodbye kisses and spent 5 minutes telling Anya goodbye. If he got even the slightest hint that something was wrong with Anya he’d be on his way back from Boston immediately. And knowing him, if he didn’t feel like there was a commercial flight available fast enough he’d either charter a private plane or try to hijack something. It’s bad enough that if something is wrong with Anya I’m probably going to have to move back in with my parents after he kicks me out, I don’t need to add visiting him in prison to the list.”

“We are not entering Sofie in a baby Miss America contest, Ilya.” Shane frowns. “Ok? It’s degrading.”
Undeterred, Ilya waves the crumpled paper in front of Shane’s face. The advert is blurry, but Shane gets his point: the baby on the front is cherubic, all gums and cheeks and big, blue eyes. “Is not a beauty pageant. See? Just a fun photo contest that everyone votes in. Our family, our friends and” — Ilya sweeps his free hand towards the living room — “all of her fans.”
