    "Ah!" Leon cried out, stumbling back in alarm as what he had previously mistaken for gunpowder in the sparsely lit storage room clearly was not. The bottle's plastic factory label was stained and peeling, making it hard to read, but it resembled the same containers he had already come across numerous times before all around the station. Yet, when he opened it, a white powder burst up into the air as if it were primed to explode. Whether it was some tasteless prank or a defective chemical that was poorly placed, he couldn't tell but as that powder hit his face, it was too late for him to draw away. He held his breath, but could not shield his eyes in time.

    They burned. It was the kind of burn he could only associate with swimming too long in a pool with too much chlorine in the water. He tried to use his sleeve to clear the powder away from his face to no avail.

    Suffering chemical burns that blind him, Leon has to rely on a very unlikely and terrifying ally to survive this hellish place in one piece.

    Mr. X, in the meantime, grows infatuated with the blinded rookie and cares for him like a small, cute, wounded animal.

    With a sigh Leon leaned his head against the cool glass of the car’s window, his gaze fixed on the scenery they were driving by. Not that it was much to look at, really. It was a rainy day, to the point of getting foggy, and the autumn had progressed so far that most of the leaves had fallen off the trees. Everything looked dreary and depressing, and Leon wasn’t enthusiastic in the slightest to get out there to search for the missing girl.

    Not that he didn’t want to help, he really did. Someone had to bring this girl back home to her father, and even if she wasn’t the daughter of the president she deserved someone to come rescue her. But the information they had to start from? Laughable, at best. Someone had maybe spotted a girl that might’ve looked like Ashley Graham, and it might have been somewhere around this general area. There were so many maybes, so many question marks, and Leon didn’t exactly feel like traipsing through the cold forests until he’d stumble across the girl.

    To make things worse, he’d been given a partner who was basically a rookie. Leon wasn't looking forward to this at all.

    Still, Leon’s treacherous heart kept wishing for more, wishing for Chris to look at him like he looked at Chris. He knew that Chris cared about him. So maybe he should just suggest that they actually make it a real relationship. They weren’t that far from it.

    “Hey, Chris—”

    “Hey, before I forget,” Chris said, interrupting Leon without even noticing it. “I’ve got to cancel next Friday.” When Chris went on, his smile was audible in his voice. “I’ve got a date! Can you believe that? A real date!”

    After Chris accidentally breaks Leon’s heart, Leon is fully prepared to nurse his bruised feelings alone. He’s less prepared for the way Piers is apparently dead set on being there for him to help him through it. He’s the least prepared for when he realizes he might just get his happy ending, after all.
