Summary
“I…” Killua begins.
I love you.
I love you so deeply that it’s truer to me than anything, even my own name.
I would offer you my still-beating heart, the whole red, raw muscle, if I thought you wouldn’t flinch at the sight of it.

Summary
“No. It’s not alright with me. I want you to play.”
Komugi fiddles with the handle with her cane, twisting and untwisting the wrist strap.
“I mean, there are some audio based games, and some adaptations that let you use voice controls, but they’re not easy to come by. I couldn’t expect you to get something like that on such short—“
“You don’t need any sort of special game,” Meruem says, decisively. “You have me.”
“I… what?”
Meruem’s footsteps draw nearer, and then he touches Komugi’s shoulder, indicating that she can take his elbow for him to guide her, which she does. He helps her to the floor, and places the controller in her hands. She isn’t sure whether to speak up again and try to make clearer how difficult it’s going to be for her to play or simply try her best to avoid making a fuss, but before she has time to decide, Meruem’s arms wrap around her from behind, his hands coming to rest on hers.
“See?” he says, and his chest is pressed so close to her back that she can feel his words as much as hear them. “I’ll help you.”

HISOKA
Well, you know what they say—keep your friends close and your enemies closer.ABENGANE
I don’t know–I mean, that must make it hard to tell them apart after a while.(In the blink of an eye, HISOKA hurls the playing card towards ABENGANE. It sails just past the side of his head and lodges itself several inches deep in the tree behind him. A hair to the right, and it would’ve amputated his ear.)

Summary
“Don’t take that tone with me!”“Yeah?” Leorio challenges. “Make me.”
It’s an extremely childish response and Leorio really should be above it. But as soon as he says it, a strange look comes over Kurapika’s face. It’s the look before a person jumps into a cold lake on a winter’s day. Or the look before someone throws the first punch. It’s the look of setting aside all reservations. Of abandoning all better judgment. Of taking an enormous risk.
Kurapika reaches up and grabs Leorio’s shirt tight in his fists. For a moment, Leorio worries Kurapika is going to hit him, but all at once Kurapika yanks him down and kisses him.
5 times Leorio called Kurapika a pet name, and one time Kurapika called him one in return

Summary
All at once, Bisky goes quiet, all the anger and frustration draining from her expression, replaced with something kind and more than a little sad.“You know, there’s only one way someone your age would be able to command electricity the way you do.”
Killua blinks dumbly, not sure what to make of this abrupt change in tone.
“It was hell on earth, wasn’t it? Your childhood.”

Summary
“I’ve told you not to call me during class unless it’s urgent. I’ll help you look for your license when I get home. Good-bye.”Dr. Kurta goes to hang up the phone, but something stops him, and he immediately flushes bright red.
“No,” he hisses, “I am not saying that back to you. I’m in class.”
Killua almost wants to pull out his phone and get footage of this. Who knew Dr. Kurta had a flustered, soft side?
“It’s not a persona. We just have very different approaches to classroom management. Good-bye.”
And with that, Dr. Kurta hangs up the phone. Any eager, prying questions the class may’ve had die on their lips when they see the expression on Dr. Kurta’s face–Killua didn’t know that the words, “Don’t even think about acknowledging that that conversation just happened if you value your lives” could be said so eloquently with just a glare.
And they were secretly married professors!

Summary
Leorio doesn’t hesitate for even a second. Summoning every ounce of aura he has and then some, he opens the Nen portal and sends his fist flying into the ring.
I don’t know how these stupid contracts even work, he thinks, but I’m well acquainted with debt. So believe me when I say that I’ll do whatever it takes for him to make it out of this in one piece. Any price, I’ll pay it. Collect whenever you want, ask for triple in return. I don’t care. But God fucking damn it, I’m not watching him die.

Summary
“Killua,” Gon repeats, slow and soothing. “What exactly did you mean by that?”
With the appearance of enormous effort, Killua schools his face into a scowl.
“I meant what I said. If an animal lives in a home with me, it’s not going to last long.”
Gon takes a step towards Killua, and Killua, mercifully, doesn’t retreat. And although Gon can now see how badly he’s trembling up close, he doesn’t pull away when Gon rests a hand on his shoulder.
“Killua,” he says, hardly above a whisper. “You’re not telling me everything, are you?”
“I think I’m being perfectly clear,” he says, his attempt at detached cruelty betrayed by the crack in his voice. “I kill things, Gon. It’s as simple as that.”

Summary
“We’re well past ‘sorry,’ Gon,” Killua spits, breaking Gon from his reverie. “I had to restart your heart a dozen times when I carried your mangled body to the hospital. ‘Sorry’ doesn’t really cover that sort of situation.”Gon nods, refusing himself any self-pity. Killua’s rage is the least of what he deserves right now.
“Do you want to hit me?” he offers. “You could, if it would make you feel better.”

Summary
Killua is not afraid.Killua is not afraid because fear is not allowed. Because fear is hesitation, and hesitation is weakness, and weakness gets you killed. Because “two for flinching” is the closest thing to scripture he’s ever known.
And Killua is not afraid because he isn’t in the cold, stone-walled rooms of the Zoldyck estate. Because since he left for the Hunter Exam all those weeks ago, he hasn’t known the harsh, brittle strike of brutality even once. Because, for the first time he can remember, he’s nearly gotten the taste of blood out of his mouth.

Summary
For the most part, Alluka tries not to dwell on the years of her childhood that she spent locked away, alone, imprisoned in a windowless room for crimes she couldn’t even begin to understand. That was then, she tells herself, and this is now. Now, she has a brother who dotes on her incessantly, friends kinder and more loyal than she ever could’ve dreamed, and the ability to feel the warmth of the sun on her skin whenever she wishes.
It’s no use remembering the claustrophobia, or the boredom that crawled along her skin as an unbearable itch, or the loneliness that she was convinced would rot her from her guts out.
Why would she call to mind the nights that she used to spend clawing at the door until her fingernails were left nothing but bloody shreds, screaming and begging to be let out? Why, when she now has everything she’d ever hoped for and extra to grow on?
Alluka, a locked door, and old memories

Summary
“I don’t really care what we do–whatever you want, I guess. I didn’t exactly grow up with a lot of holiday traditions to fall back on.”
“I know,” Leorio says, and it’s too soft and too knowing. “That’s why I’m asking.”
And just like that, whatever was keeping Killua’s rage and fear restrained bursts open, and he’s jumping up from the table, chair legs scraping harshly against the kitchen floor as he does.
“What part of ‘I don’t fucking care’ are you missing here?” he snarls. “Let’s be honest–the only reason we’re spending this godforsaken holiday together is because Kurapika and Gon are both overseas right now. You don’t like me, I don’t like you, so what’s the point in pretending otherwise?”

“So what’d you do this time?”
Kurapika frowns.
“If that’s how you’re going to be about it, I’ll just visit the emergency department.”
“Oh, well excuse me if I’m not the epitome of hospitality when you show up at my door at nearly three in the morning because you need my help, but couldn’t be bothered to answer a single one of my texts for the past several months.”

Summary
The look on Killua’s face when Wing releases his Nen is unmistakable.
He hadn’t meant to frighten the boys when he showed them his technique, just impress upon them the power they were facing if they continued at Heaven’s Arena. Gon’s reaction had been the kind of thing he was expecting—his face pale, his muscles tensed, eyes wide and shocked.
But Killua had been a different matter altogether.
Wing had blinked, and Killua was clinging to the far corner of the ceiling, trembling so badly that Wing worried he was going to fall.
Killua’s reaction wasn’t just sensible shock and alarm at facing an unknown power. No, it was the conditioned reaction of someone who’d encountered Nen a thousand times before and was certain that pain was soon to follow it.
Killua’s reaction was a flinch.

“Why did you agree to help me? Back when I was in the hospital.”
Alluka tilts her head, uncomprehending.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean you didn’t even know me. And any use of your power is a huge risk. And I’d just hurt Killua so terribly. And I deserved what happened to me, really. It was my choices that made me end up like that, so I should live with the—”
All at once, Gon finds himself breathing too hard and fast to speak. He grips the cafe table with enough force that the wood begins to splinter.
Alluka and Gon have a heart-to-heart.

Summary
Leorio runs towards Kurapika's voice.
He's only just woken up, has no idea the time, is completely unarmed and still in his nightclothes, but it doesn't matter.
Because Kurapika cried out in distress. Leorio would run straight through the gates of hell without a backward glance at that sound.
(He swears to himself, and to anyone else, were they to ask, that it's nothing more than the fervency of his devotion as a guard. He can't allow himself to acknowledge the alternative. Not someone like him. Not with the nation's king.)

Summary
When Killua had imagined these fights — when he’d only heard talk of this place and hadn’t yet visited himself — he’d pictured larger-than-life theatricality. Colorful stage lights, big, showy athletic displays, and a crowd hanging onto the competitors’ every dramatic move.
But when he arrived, the lights were nothing but harsh fluorescents and the fighters were brutal and efficient. This audience wasn’t here for a performance.
They were here for blood.
