Sam watched Bucky jump off his barstool, almost falling completely onto the ground, holding onto the stool as casually as he could as if he meant to do that, Sam grinning.
Bucky looked so cute. All surprised with a hit of adrenaline making him vibrate a bit. Sam liked that he could do this. Catch the man off guard. Bucky was always so prepared for all situations, always so ready with comeback lines and impromptu plans that Sam almost felt as if it was his obligation to scare the pants off the man, that if he was the only man who could do it, then it was only right that Sam did.
Plus, it was fun.
“What is this, Clone Wars Era Coruscant? Why is this guy you’re looking for even selling death sticks? Are we reliving pre-Empire fads? Who uses death sticks anymore?” asked Sam, glancing around the room to find this dealer.

“What happened to Siriana?” asked Sam, not sure if he wanted to know.
“Oh, Siriana?” said Sif, a little glee in her voice.
“Don’t tell him,” said Heimdall, looking sheepish – a very rare thing to see on the man.
Sam probably didn’t want to know.
Fuck.
“No,” said Sam, regretting saying this, “I have to know now.”
“Mommas met her and… left her on a desert island,” said Sif with glee.
“They what,” said Sam, trying to understand.
“Pulled Siriana in and,” said Sif, dramatic, as if dropping something with her own hand, and did that mean they were giant or that they could just move people with the bifröst too, “Dropped her on the shore of a barren island.”
“It wasn’t that bad,” said Heimdall, “It had… trees.”
Great.

His favorite place was up on his roof, though.
A two-story home on one of the higher spots on the island of Delacroix, it was the perfect vantage point to see all. Sam was able to take in so much from up there; his neighborhood; the forest peppered between the houses, the coast surrounding his island home, Lost Lake and Lake Lery in the distance, the Gulf Coast on the horizon, the small salty marsh, maritime forest, and coastal prairie islands that made up the Louisiana coastline.
“Room for two?”
Sam smiled.
“What do you think?” asked Sam, making room next to himself despite there being room everywhere on the roof.
Because he always wanted Steve to sit next to him.

“Is it weird that I love the outfit that was picked out just for me?” asked Sam to the comms.
“I love it on you,” said Sharon, “Really hugs your ass well.”
“It does make America’s ass look beautiful,” said Joaquín, “It really does something for your chest too. Very well put together. I can’t believe he gave you cufflinks.”
“Look, I know my boyfriend has the best ass in town,” said Bucky, “Well. The world. No. The universe. Hmm. Actually, the multiverse? Wait, what were we talking about again?”
“How good Sam looks?” said Sharon.
“Right. Stop perving on my boyfriend’s beautiful, glorious ass,” said Bucky.

Sam decides to take a break from Avengers business after Age of Ultron. He puts out an ad for a roommate on Craigslist for his new apartment in Delacroix. He gets one response from a "Dr. Buffy Burnes".
EXCERPT:
“Buffy?” said Sam curiously, “Like the Vampire Slayer?”
Bucky frowned in confusion.
“…Yes?” said Bucky, definitely not understanding the reference.
Sam didn’t even know how Bucky got into the country. Probably the same way he got out. Sam honestly didn’t even care. The terrible blonde wig; the nondescript glasses; the button down and gloves that made zero sense in Delacroix, Louisiana; Sam was having a time with this, trying not to buzz too delightfully at the thought that the first and seemingly only person to answer Sam’s Craigslist ad for a roommate was Bucky fucking Barnes in disguise.
Sam wondered if that was because Delacroix was such a small community; Sam wondered if it was because Bucky did something so that he was the only person who could respond. Again, Sam didn’t care. This was an Oscar performance worthy of a Razzie and Sam was honored to be here with front row seats to it.

EXCERPT:
“I heard about Sam from the VA office, but I didn’t expect it would be… um.”
Riley’s face heated up instantly.
“If you don’t want to do this, it’s okay if you want to go,” said Sam, fidgeting.
“No! It’s um. I’ve never seen a… client out in the wild. But… But I’ve heard a lot about you,” said Riley, his face turning redder, “And I wouldn’t have gone out to this if I didn’t think that this might be nice. Are you sure that you’re fine with…?”
Riley let the question hang in the air until Sam realized what he was asking.
“Oh. Yeah. No, I’m not – it’s a job. I called in. Let’s just. Let’s see how we feel about this, and if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work, okay?” said Sam.
Riley gave Sam a tentative smile as he grabbed his drink from Eli.
“Okay,” said Riley, “I guess… it wouldn’t hurt. If you’re fine with this.”

Bucky keeps saying very distracting old-timey phrases to Sam. Sam is doing his best to act like a normal person when he hears them.
EXCERPT:
Sam needed to stop it. Clearly, he had to. Sam could see that Bucky noticed. He knew how Sam reacted. Probably. He was pretty sure Bucky knew, though, bless Bucky’s heart, the man was as dense as a pound cake sometimes. Sam needed to stop the madness before it reached critical levels of Sam losing brain cells near the man.
It happened without warning. Without rhyme or reason. Sam swore he knew that Bucky knew how to act like a modern person. How to at least go about his day without an anachronism popping up. He had years in Europe to fine tune how to be a person in the twenty-first century. Bucky had no excuse. None.
But still, there it attacked Sam’s heart when he least expected it.
“You’re a divine dish, Sam,” Bucky said as Sam turned to see Bucky watching Sam watch the sunset on Sarah’s porch instead of the sunset itself, smiling at Sam like he didn’t just break Sam’s brain with his words.

Why did Bucky have a Magic Mike tactical jacket?
“I found Figaro the same way. Sort of,” said Sam, “I found her wandering near my apartment balcony, with these big sad eyes and these whimpery mewls for food. She wanders in and out of my apartment now. I’ve gotten her a million cat trees. I probably spoil her to death.”
“Huh,” said Bucky as he unzipped what had become a tactical vest to reveal the Wilson Family Seafood sleeveless shirt he must have stolen from Sam at some point, “What a coincidence. Maybe there was a cat mom around who had a litter near our apartment complex.”

EXCERPT:
A goose had matched Sam with Riley while they were both jogging.
A talking falcon was currently matching Sam with an infamous murderer right after the man stole Sam’s steering wheel while he was still driving the car.
“Dearly beloveds, it is time for you to join as a pair!” Sam heard before he saw a falcon with the height of one and a half Subway sandwiches and the wingspan of a small child fucking wreck the Winter Soldier.
Just.
Brutally dig his claws into the Soldier’s shoulder as he stabbed the Soldier in the forehead with his beak hard enough to draw blood. The Soldier, understandably surprised, lost his balance and took the steering wheel with him as he fell back onto the street.
“Wrong way, good sir!” cawed the intense falcon as Sam felt the Winter Soldier’s body like a speed bump under the car, “Your mate is up here!”
Then the falcon turned to Sam.
“Nope,” said Sam, shaking his head furiously, “No, no, no. Do not come near me. Take Steve or Nat. No thank you.”

EXCERPT:
Sam could see him.
Scruffy, mismatched hoodies and all.
He could see the man who shaped the 20th century with his assassinations, the war hero turned cyborg, the man on the run himself, Bucky Barnes.
Peeking out from behind a corner like a child playing hide and seek. Snickering to himself like he just pulled off the greatest heist ever known to man.
And Sam didn’t know what to think of that at first.
Sam thought this would be like all the rendezvous he’d had with the infamous Winter Soldier this past year. He thought it’d be them meeting silently in a public place. Wandering into a crowd as they whispered about their week, their month; talked about Sam’s insecurities and fears; taped together whatever spotty memory Bucky had. Sam thought it’d be sitting down at a café reading books together or feeding pigeons in Central Park.
Yet here he was, unsure as to whether he should acknowledge Bucky as Misty Knight of all people appeared before Sam, waving like she had been waiting for Sam all this time.
