Pilot Thomas "Tommy" Kinard hasn't been a ranch hand for seven years. However, a chance meeting with his old coworkers and some new cowboys, especially a certain Evan "Buck" Buckley, seems to be changing his life for the better.
EXCERPT:
“Evan!”
Tommy.
Turned his gaze back to the dirty blonde. And Tommy would say the man was a little sheepish, but it seemed as if something else overcame him once Tommy was looking straight at him again.
Excitement?
Nervousness?
Awe?
No.
Couldn’t be any of those. Tommy wasn’t the kind of guy who inspired that.
“Evan Buckley,” breathed Evan.
And.
And Tommy forgot that he should be shaking his hand too, right? Not that – not that Evan was offering.
But.
Tommy took the initiative, extending his own.
“Wow. Uh. Big hands,” said Evan, maybe babbled, as he shook Tommy’s hand and looked so expectantly at Tommy.
Tommy couldn’t say no to that face. He couldn’t say nothing.
“You have a good handshake too, Evan,” offered Tommy, a little distracted by Evan’s adorable smile.
The little laugh he was making.
Wait.
Were they still shaking hands?

Summary

"Uh – what should I call you?”
“I mean, Firehose was what I went by when I was doing strip teases back in the day. I thought Lucy would have told you that, at least,” snorted Tommy as he stepped into the house, “But since it looks like I might be here for a little while and I know some people here, Tommy. Tommy Kinard.”
“Tommy,” the man echoed, a little – was that dreamily?
Couldn’t be that.
“Is that your name too, or…?” Tommy started to ask, because he really felt like this was supposed to be a bit of an introduction.
“Me? Uh. No, I’m not Tommy too. I mean. Weird, right? That would be such a weird coincidence. But. No. Uh – Evan. Evan Buckley,” said the man as he shook Tommy’s hand.
“It’s very nice to meet you, Evan,” said Tommy and - had Tommy just felt Evan shiver at that?
And.
Just.
Kept shaking Tommy’s hand.
Staring at Tommy.
Maybe.
Looking Tommy up and down.

Summary
When Evan "Buck" Buckley gets word that his sister, Maddie, is going to run away from her abusive husband, a baron of another land, he gathers a group of people to set out to find her. Tommy never expected to do much else other than protect the realm he was magically tied to. That was, until a handsome man pleads for Tommy to help him save his sister.
EXCERPT:
“He can’t possibly be a dragon,” blurted the dirty blond man, pointing at Tommy.

So, this man was the one who spoke before.
The dirty blond.
“I mean, his eyes are kind of reptilian. They do that slit thing,” said the other new guy, “Not that it looks bad or anything. It’s a good look for you.”
The brunette.

“Thank you?” said Tommy, a little confused.
The dirty blond seemed to look between Tommy and the brunette, stepping slightly between the two so that he was a little closer to Tommy before saying, “You’re human-sized. Even if you’re a dragon, how would you carry us all?”
“You’d be surprised how big I can get,” Tommy said, doing his best not to laugh when the other new person let out a surprised chuckle.

Summary

EXCERPT:
“Maybe it will give me some insight about the curse,” said Evan as he found the film, “Wow. I think the guy who plays Billy only acted in this film. Boils strikes again.”
“Did he die on set or something?” asked Tommy, trying not to panic at that idea.
“No. He just. Wasn’t in another film. Kind of like how the guy who played Count Orlock in Nosferatu wasn’t in a lot of films either,” explained Evan as he scrolled through his phone, “But still. Boils struck.”
Tommy.
Looked up the actor who played William James McCurdy on his phone.
“The internet tells me he owned a successful floral shop after the film flopped,” countered Tommy.
“But was his acting career successful?” asked Evan as if it were a gotcha, “Boils. It’s Billy Boils.”

EXCERPT:
It couldn’t have been a hallucination, though. The doorbell kept ringing and ringing and ringing until Tommy finally stood up.
He stood up.
He dragged himself to the door.
He opened it.
To.
Find.
“Evan,” Tommy breathed.
And fuck, he wasn’t supposed to say that anymore. Because if he did, he would fall back into that illusion that – that farce. That there was a way that this wouldn’t end up with Tommy kicked to the curb. That there was some real chance for a future.
But Evan was there.
Eyes puffy and red.
And every few blinks, there were tears.
And before Tommy could do anything, Evan had stumbled through the door; practically scrambled as if scared Tommy would close it. His hands were on Tommy’s face, holding it in place as his mouth went to crash into Tommy’s, and – and faltered. Scrambling and hiccupping through desperation and tears as Evan choked out, “One more time. Please. Please, Tommy. Just one more time.”
And Tommy didn’t know what Evan was asking for.
One more kiss?

Usually, when Tommy saw someone stealing food, his rule of thumb was no, you didn’t. Tommy had been that kid before. He wasn’t going to make someone’s life infinitely worse due to their own desperation.
And this wasn’t Tommy exactly calling the kid out.
But.
He really was not going to fit that giant bag of chips into his sweatshirt in a way that was going to conceal it. And as Tommy watched the guy struggling to shove the party size bag of Lays Classic of all things into one of his sweatshirt pockets, Tommy couldn’t help but say, “Ramen.”

Summary

EXCERPT:
The man tried to speak, but all that came out was a coughing storm of pollen. Which made Buck worried. Made Buck scramble through his medicine cabinet to grab the little measuring cup for his Dayquil before rushing to the sink to get water and running back to give it to the man.
And it was so big in the man’s hands.
Like a man drinking from a bobbing for apples basin.
But it seemed to suffice as the man took a moment to drink the water.
Buck.
Just.
Watched.
Marveled as this man the size of a soda can drank an entire thirty milliliters of water.
Just.
Chugged it.
And, maybe it was a blessing that the measuring cup was two inches because it did at least obfuscate the man’s nakedness. He gazed up at Buck with those gripping blue eyes as he said, his voice rough, “Wow. Usually, I don’t wake up to someone in front of me.”

Might have panicked and ran into his bathroom.

He was tanned. Not too tanned, but he definitely tanned more than burned in the sun. He had an aquiline nose, distinct cheekbones, and a cleft. He had curly hair; curly, chestnut brown hair. He was banged up from the hit and run. Cuts and bruises, though, the swelling was going down and the fresh red-purple was seeping into a yellow. Had three casts and almost lost his spleen. Dry lips from a week and a half asleep.
He was breathing, though.
Breathing steadily.
