Sometimes, when the light of the sunset streams through the window at just the right angle, Kawi looks magical. He looks like his skin and hair contain the glow of something beyond understanding. Pisaeng stares openly in those moments, admiring the look but also beating down the fear in his heart.

Rolling his eyes but privately relieved Kawi isn’t having a commitment-related panic attack, Pisaeng gently peels the duvet back until the sight of his adorable beloved is returned to him. Just as gently, he finger-combs Kawi’s static-crisped fringe away from his forehead.
“We don’t need to get married,” Pisaeng says.
Kawi’s entire body drops with relief like a cut bowstring.
“But,” Pisaeng adds, “I want to know why, if you’ll tell me?”

“I brought back dish-washing pods from the States,” Pisaeng explains.
“What do they put in the dish soap over there? It can’t be legal here. Like that flu syrup you take that knocks you out for forty-eight hours.” Kawi has yet to accompany Pisaeng on a trip to his other country, and it’s experiences like this that tell him he’s right to hesitate. Not only could he get shot at a cinema buying one of those all-you-can-eat popcorn vats Pisaeng talks about, but apparently he could also be eaten alive by turbo-charged dish suds.
