    Catra turned around, and the rehearsed retail greeting died on her tongue. Because there was Adora. And memories she'd buried and bottled for years hit her with the force of a freight train.

    She remembered how alone she’d felt, from that day forward, how every day that year she wished on every star she saw that Adora would turn back up at her door and it would be like she’d never left.

     But Adora never came back.

     And Catra wasn’t a kid anymore.

     So she shoved down all of the rawness she felt. She grabbed a cup and a sharpie. She forced her face into a bland, retail smile, looked into those hopelessly blue eyes and said with an impersonal coolness, as if her heart was still whole in her chest and not shriveled and dark and breaking beneath her ribs:

    “What’s the name for this order?”

    Catra works at a coffee shop and hates every second, Adora is an all-around prodigy on an athletic scholarship who runs on caffeine and pure adrenaline. But when their paths cross again, they're both forced to face their shared past — and the feelings they really suck at keeping hidden.

    “It’s me. I’m the one whose love is rotten,” Catra whispered.
     

    Or: Catra has a hard time accepting her own feelings, but luckily Adora has enough determination to talk her girlfriend through it. Helping Catra hit on her own best friend might be taking it a little bit too far, though.
