He hadn't exactly heard great things about it. Lots of the freshman were avoiding this place like the plague and he could see why. The grass out front was overgrown, window shutters hanging off their hinges. The house itself was a lot smaller than the other ones on the block. He couldn't imagine there were many members if they managed to fit into a one story just fine. It made him even more nervous to knock, worried that they'd take one look at him and dismiss him for not fitting their image either.
Fortunately, he was saved the trouble when the door went flying open, a mop of hair and a snapback breezing past.

Unsurprisingly, the Chiss Ascendancy is less than thrilled to find themselves with yet another human seeking asylum. Facing a hearing in front of the Syndicure, Reader is forced to endure a crash course in Chiss society and Chaos trade languages. She is surprised, however, when Admiral Ar'alani volunteers to teach her. During their daily lessons, Reader and the admiral find an unexpected connection that threatens both of their reputations. Still, it might be worth the risk, given their unexpected connection and the unmoored feeling that comes in the wake of so many changes.

Summary
Reader is a sensor technologist with grand ideas, but she is limited by the ghosts of her past. She finds an unlikely home aboard the ISD Chimaera and an even more unlikely connection with her commander, Grand Admiral Thrawn. Their relationship, built on physical attraction, starts to deepen until they are torn apart by the Battle of Lothal.
Thrawn's last wish is that Reader go to the Ascendancy, where they can make use of her technological expertise. She finds herself once again at the mercy of a Chiss admiral, detained aboard the Steadfast in Ar'alani's care until the Syndicure can decide on the question of political asylum. Reader once again builds an unlikely connection with someone beyond her reach, and she fights against an attraction that could ruin both her and Ar'alani forever.
Finally, Reader finds her place in the Chiss Ascendancy, and it seems that all is how it should be.
