Eddie sees Steve’s eyes widen as he softly breathes, “Oh sh… shit.”
Within a moment, Eddie is at Steve’s side as he stumbles, nearly collapsing to the ground until he crashes into Eddie’s chest. Eddie grabs him quickly to both steady and hold him up.
“Oh Jesus,” Eddie says for what feels like the millionth time that day, “You-!”
“I’m fine,” Steve cuts him off, but with the way his voice is strained and he’s slumped against Eddie, unable to support most of his own weight, Eddie would have to be both blind and deaf to believe him. "Wow, take me to dinner first, won't ya, Eddie?"
Eddie realizes that Steve’s actually a really good person, but man, he really needs to stop throwing himself headfirst into danger.

It was just another night on the job for Steve, driving a limo for Bauman’s company, except it was prom night 1989 and he had a customer named Munson who was chaperoning a bunch of high schoolers around town—to Benny’s and the arcade, to prom at Hawkins High, and to Lovers Lake afterward for s’mores by campfire.
Over the course of the night Steve found himself drawn into the little family, welcomed with open arms. And more and more he was especially drawn to Eddie.
It felt like everything he did now mattered, every move might affect the rest of his life and the direction it went. That’s what his parents said at least, usually when they were disparaging his job and the fact he’d left his dad’s company. And if every move might affect his life, he was interested in moving towards something he actually wanted, like Eddie and the promise of a future outside Hawkins.

“I’m sorry,” Erica says, but she’s talking to Eddie now. “You shouldn’t still have to deal with all of that, it’s fucking horrible.”
Eddie smiles, bold and brave and beautiful, lurching forward to pull her into a hug. It ends up a bit awkward since her bike is still wedged between them, but she allows it without so much as a scoff.
“Aw, m’lady,” he coos, but the look he shoots at Steve over the top of her head is sharp as a blade. Steve feels a shiver run down his spine. He knows that look. It means Eddie has a plan, and neither hell and all its devils nor an overprotective boyfriend are gonna keep him from seeing it through. “Ever the valiant one, looking out for little old me and what small sliver of honor I can still call my own. However … it’s your honor that has been insulted here, and that’s the far greater slight.”

Summary
Steve and Eddie’s friendship developed into something more after defeating Vecna with the rest of the Party the prior summer. Steve had reached a point where he wanted to address the fast-growing feelings for Eddie that he had. Eddie, unable to accept that Steve’s feelings were pure, pushed him away in an attempt to protect himself ultimately resulting in Steve leaving Hawkins to stay with one of his aunt and uncle in California with the intention of not returning until he received a phone call from Robin notifying him of her mom falling ill. Steve finds himself back in Hawkins, struggling to cope with all the returning memories of the trauma he endured and had been avoiding since he left in addition to coming to terms with the fact that his feelings he had for Eddie were not in fact bullshit like it had been suggested. As if all that wasn't enough, the Party is thrown into another Upside Down run in and Steve isn't so sure they're all going to be able to make it out of this one alive.
(Or Eddie feels like he isn't good enough for Steve and breaks things off causing Steve to leave Hawkins. Steve comes back and they're both still hopelessly in-love with each other but are afraid to admit it.)

Anxiety and humiliation coil low in his stomach, crawl all over his skin, and he can practically feel his hackles rising in their wake.
"What?" he snaps, and cringes back. Not only because of the way Eddie’s eyes are still locked on him, also because of the way his own voice comes out. All harsh and abrasive and mean, the echo of a boy he thought was long gone. "Don't look at me, it was your stupid idea!"
Eddie blinks. Then, slowly, his mouth starts to curl into a lazy smile.
"Aw, sweet thing," he coos. He finally closes the door and sets the tiara down on a shelf. Then, he advances on Steve, a slow and deliberate saunter. "But I am looking at you."
With two long steps, he's right in Steve’s space, hands on his hips, thumbs stroking over the smooth fabric of the panties, the sensitive scar tissue of the skin above. His eyes are dark and hungry, breath hot on Steve's skin as he leans in to nose at his neck.
"How could I not? God, honey, the fucking sight you make!"

It's been two years since Eddie has seen any of them, and what follows is Eddie's reckoning with what he left behind, and what he wants from his future.

"But it was a little obvious that Steve wasn’t ready for whatever they were crawling towards. That, as he had every right to be, he was scared of the feelings that were ballooning between them. So Eddie left, despite knowing that the cliff’s edge they had been balancing on might not be there when he came back.
And his mind reminds him of that now, as Alex Trebek announces the daily double, that the precipice might still be there. That he’ll see Steve again and be able to find his spot as easily as he did two years ago, right on the edge. That tomorrow, for better or worse, he’ll know."
