Edward closes his eyes, counts up to nine. One to four, the numbers in his head match the tap of heels hitting the floorboards; five is when they stop near the doorframe, hovering as if hoping for an invitation; six-seven-eight, they cross the threshold and draw near. Nine, and Thomas is right behind him. Close.
“Ned? It’s getting late.”
Thomas’s voice curls around him, soft and precise and sharp. Edward could cut himself on it, if he’s not careful. He’s done so already, once before the order given and the vote taken, twice after.

I was a shipper of them and was guttered when Colin was killed off so I decided to write one where he doesn’t get killed and show his developing relationship with Mare.

“You said to Francis, the night of your attack, what happened to John Ross at Fury Beach could happen to him, too.” Thomas pulls his attention from the hearth and lets it rest on James Fitzjames. This James is sharp in all the wrong places. “I've had a chance to read Ross's memoir and I found nothing self-critical there,” James Fitzjames continues. “Do you refute the truth of his account?”
Thomas laughs. “Someone's going to have to think of a new kind of memoir, Sir, if truth is what you're after.”

“Commander Fitzjames.”
Barrow’s voice pierces through the deafening chatter of the people around him, yanking James painfully back to the present. He turns, feeling dizzy and disoriented. There’s too many bodies; it’s all at once too warm and too cold and there’s too much noise.
James remembers to smile, though it’s more of a forced grimace. Speaking is difficult, and his throat is sore from the few words he’s said that night. Once he might’ve loved nothing more than to indulge the vultures pecking at him for stories, but James is not that man anymore. He doesn’t think he’ll ever be right again.

Graham’s company has already gone over. Francis can hear the men yelling interspersed with gunfire and explosions. His company– a hundred and thirty five men– stand at the ladders, ready to charge out on the second wave. The air is cold, the sun blotted out by dark clouds of smoke.
“Affix bayonets!” James calls out to the assembled men.
Francis sees them all move together, locking the knife on to the end of their rifles. He slings his own over one shoulder, walking down the length of the trench to check his men are ready. They’re tense, knuckles white as they grip their guns.
“Steady men!” He yells, reaching out to pat the more nervous looking ones on the shoulders as he passes them. Francis touches his gas mask, then the three grenades hanging at his hip. He sees James, standing with his rifle tucked under one arm, pocket watch in hand.
“Thirty seconds.” James tells him.
A soldier in line turns to the side and retches.
“Rifles at the ready!” Francis roars. “Hold men! Forward on my order!”
He reaches out and rests a hand on James’s shoulder. “I’m with you.” James whispers. Francis squeezes his shoulder.
