They retook Fhirdiad. There might actually be an ‘after the war’ where Sylvain survives. Where his unavoidable future comes crashing down on him. As it so happens, Ingrid’s been thinking about her own future too, and she has a proposition for him.
Sylvain and Ingrid have been friends forever, their familiar routine a source of comfort. So when things escalate, Sylvain finds himself struggling to maintain things as they are and not cross the line into relationship territory. After all, everybody knows all his relationships inevitably end, and if there’s one person he can’t lose, it’s Ingrid.

And now it’s Sylvain’s turn for a little cognitive dissonance. He’s so very relieved that Byleth respects him and his wishes, yet shockingly disappointed that there’s a guarantee of no wandering hands on their first full night together.
Maybe he’s not as afraid of the physical side of things as he thinks.

When he finds Byleth disheartened by Dimitri's actions with Randolph von Bergliez and Byleth asks Sylvain to bathe with him instead of going to the regular bathhouse with the other former-students, Sylvain can hardly say no.

“I surely can’t have that,” Sylvain backs away just enough to clear the air, reset any tone he accidentally caused and dismiss her worries. “Then I’ll just keep a close eye and stay out of your way. Once we’ve conquered this side of the Alliance, we can make up for stolen time with tea – how’s that sound?”
“That sounds beautiful.”
It won’t last.
Of course, just a brief moment has to be destroyed again, but the whispers of a nightmare. The voice beyond the Goddess takes Sylvain’s throat and robs him of his words. He swallows down, a gaze of copper falling away from Mercedes’ periwinkle. For how beautiful her eyes are and how gorgeous his time is with her, his fist feels empty and his veins feel full. He bites his lip and gives a half-grin to Mercedes, and waves himself off.
“I’ll let you be. I have some chores to attend to anyways.” He lies and steps away before he can hear Mercedes give her goodbye. He hates her goodbyes anyways; it's best to mute them away.
