It’s a prominent question that continues to breach in his mind like a parasite. He heard Mori mention it once, but he’s never figured out what the word means.
Someone had brought him to this room just now. Why? To train, of course! He’s Mori’s Doll- a perfect toy.
His head hurts. What is pain? He shouldn’t be feeling it. Dolls don’t feel pain with their porcelain skin and wooden eyes.
Someone tells him to shut off. Automatically, like a button being pressed, his head hangs down like a tree.
He does the only thing he can do- shut off.

For Dazai, the blackness described his corrupted soul; his decaying heart. If he was the black of the rotten sludge in the sewers, Chuuya would have been the black of midnight, descending slowly, stealthily creeping up behind to lure a person into its unfathomable depths.
Yet, stars still shine through the oppressive night sky. Where there is darkness, there inevitably is light. But anything pure for Dazai has been long overtaken by the black that never will shine with stars.

Dazai does not think Yokohama should be negotiating with their parent state. No, this opinion doesn't have anything to with the fact that Chuuya has been assigned to Outer-Japan. It's just that Dazai knows he'll be called in for clean-up once the slug inevitably messes up due to his weakened state.
Despite his best efforts to be a good owner and buy his dog more time to recover in the safety of their own city- such an assignment is bigger than the both of them, and time is unfortunately ticking away. Annoying Chuuya is Dazai's preferred way to spend his time; but until they can reunite, he'll just have to keep himself otherwise occupied.
**This installment could be considered something of a prologue to 'Broken Windows.' It is a companion piece to the overarching story, where the depicted events take place before and during the first few chapters of 'Broken Windows.' Namely, 'Broken Mirrors' is about Dazai and what he gets up to before properly joining the main story's cast.
