    Storm’s End was nothing like what Edda had expected. She had expected a battered old castle on a cliff. Which it was, but Storm’s End was massive, more grim than magnificent, in a way similar to Winterfell. They said it had been constructed by Durran Godsgrief, who’d taken Elenei to wed, and faced the wrath of the gods by doing so. The children of the forest were said to have helped fortify the walls with magic, so that no storm might ever topple it.

    And then some said Bran the Builder, who’d founded Edda’s house, had helped to construct the impenetrable fortress. She felt some sense of belonging, looking at it, so maybe the legends were true.

She couldn’t have been any older than four or five. It was before Prince Duncan ran off with that peasant girl and gave up his rights to the throne. Now it will go to his brother, Prince Jaehaerys. Septa says he was mad for love. Aemma can’t comprehend of such a thing, but then again, she has never fallen in love, and she certainly hopes the first man she falls for is not poor and lowborn, no matter how pretty his looks.

    The pregnancy has already begun to fill out her long face some- along with her rapidly swelling hands and feet- and she has not worn Stark colors since her wedding day. Yet Robert likes her in soft greys, gentle blues, maidenly whites, even forest greens. Anything that reminds him of Lyanna, who always favored cooler colors in her dress.

    Where their father is narrow, almost hunched in his age, Aemon is broad and barrel-chested; he was a plump little boy, a stocky youth, and now that he is of age, still shows no signs of halting his growth. He is six foot now and will like as not have another two inches by this time next year. His face is square and hard, his neck thick and corded with muscle, as are his shoulders and arms. Tailors despair of him, they always have to adjust their measurements and let his tunics and breeches out, or he’d look like a giant squeezed into a child’s clothes.

    And despite this, he is still handsome, not brutish or piggish looking, with a strong nose and chin and silvery hair so pale in most lights it looks snow light. Like Alyssa’s, it tends to curl, and because of this he keeps it closely cropped around his ears. If she had it her way, he’d grow it out, but Aemon thinks only of his jousting and sparring and that means all must accommodate his helm and armor and his steel. Right now, for example, he seems to be imagining running her through with his feasting knife.

Yet he took them into his wife’s household, and Shaera made it clear they were to be treated as full members of the family, not servants or charity cases. The girls learned to read and write, to dance and dress, to play the bells and the high harp and to sing, though only Agnes can carry a tune. They did not see much of Rhaegar as girls, their educations conducted separately, but they always ate with the royal family and their apartments are very close to the queen’s. Too close, Betha sometimes thinks. Every so often, she can hear Rhaella’s cries in the night.

    The Lannisters might have been well rid of Ellyn, the grasping bitch, but she had the audacity to get with child, and one can assume that while dear Jeyne prayed her hardest for her goodsister to miscarry the babe, and perhaps contemplated slipping her some moon tea, Ellyn’s belly grew with every month following Tion’s death. Six months later, she gave birth to a daughter, who, once she’d recovered from the disappointment of a girl, she promptly named Rohanne.

Yes, he was entirely sober, knew that his actions were counter to Prince Jaehaerys’ will for his son, but believed ‘twould be a greater sin to force Prince Aerys into marriage to his own sister, a match Aerys did not consent to.
