The old cruising trawler, The Astral, had been handed down from grandfather to father to son, a rusted heirloom with more ghosts than fresh paint. But even he had to admit he couldn’t run the damn thing alone. The only man he would want to work with had already settled into retirement. Still, necessity outweighed pride, so he posted a call for a deckhand.
Only one soul answered.
Herman, tall, trembling, wide-eyed Herman, showed up looking like he might bolt if someone sneezed too loudly. But he was willing, he was young, and more importantly… he was the only applicant.
So, by the simple law of desperation, the job was his. Robert didn’t mention how his father used to say the sea knew their family by name. Or how something out there had been circling the boat since the day the old man died.
Something that still hadn’t gone away.
