Summary
Impulse would be the first to tell you that paranormal investigation of any sort is a dangerous job. Sure, any job has its risks; mistakes have consequences wherever you work, whatever you do. It just so happens that the consequences associated with ghost hunting are slightly more…dire than for your average job.
Ghost hunting could turn out to be deadly. Not permanently, of course; instant revivals had made sure of that.
Still, returning from the dead…it wasn’t an easy task. Even with the assistance of instant revivals, it's rough. It has...effects, without fail.
Impulse has made it a point to teach every new teammate—Grian, Scar, Gem—that everyone reacts differently to deaths. And especially to being brought back. Impulse, as an example that he provided to the group, explained his own experiences with returning to life.
Recovering from the deaths was never easy, but they’ve always managed. Even when things don’t go quite as planned.
Or, five times the GIGGS crew deals with returning from the dead, and one time things go terribly, horribly wrong.

He was so tired, so scared. He didn't know what the Watchers meant in their offer, but he didn't care. Anything would be better than where he came from.
“Don't put me back, please.” He whispered, voice breaking. “I can't stay there anymore.”

To anyone else, the noise level would be manageable. To anyone else, it would be easy to tune out. To anyone else, this wouldn't be a problem.
Scar felt like he was dying.
He was already regretting leaving the Hero Tower for the holidays. One week, they had given him. The kind of vacation most heroes dreamed of. He had broken his collarbone fighting a high level villain and even with healing potions, it would take another few days before he was in top shape.
Of course, that hadn't stopped him from going out as Evoker. He just stuck to vigilante and villain escorting, spending far too many hours on the streets rather than in bed.
Now, surrounded by his family with a rapidly worsening headache, he was pretty sure he'd rather get a beatdown from Ren than stay here any longer.

It hurts. His heart feels as though it's splitting in two, shattering into a thousand pieces. He is so alone. He has always been so alone. He isn't filled with loss, because that would mean he had something to lose. No. He's always been alone.

"Scar, please, you're scaring me."
Loneliness is not a new thing for him. It has been with him his whole life. It follows him closely, clinging to his shoulders in a way that cannot be shaken. He is alone and he always will be. No one cares. No one will ever care. He will never make the connections he wants. He will never grow old alongside another person. He will never be someone's most important person. No matter how much he wants it, how much he craves the feeling of being wanted, being loved, he will never get it in the way he needs.
That's how it's always been. That's how it will always be.

She puts those thoughts aside for now, not wanting to spiral. Instead, she looks at Hotguy, “What about you? I’m sure you’re worrying how the city will survive without you for a few days.”
He is a bit worried, Scar’s usual watchful eyes will be in a whole different town. Granted, he’s not just going there to goof off—there’s a legitimate reason why, two technically. The first is because he’s Ariana’s bodyguard. But the second is because of the timing. The Octagon happens to be in the very town they’re heading to, meaning it’s a perfect opportunity for Scar to do some investigating. Yet even with that reasoning, Scar can’t help but feel guilt and hesitation, like he’s abandoning his responsibility.
He doesn’t need to burden her with feelings he can handle on his own just fine. So he does what he does best, and he looks at her with a reassuring smile. “They’ll be fine on their own for a couple of nights.” He shrugs, taking a bite from his bagel. “I’ll be back before they know it.”
Ariana’s newest collab brings Scar right back to where his nightmare began. Surely it’ll be fine, right?

He growled, the only sound he was capable of making with the muzzle strapped to his face, then tilted his head to listen more closely, his antenna flicking as he picked up on the sound.

His feet couldn't root into the ground, it was made of concrete and tile, too strong for him to break through. They had done that on purpose.
