Summary
Steve Randle sat on the curb of a gas station not too far from the Curtis house. He was originally there to buy something for his eye, a cold Pepsi or even just ice, but the worker was quick to kick him out. Steve didn't even have the energy to punch the guy in the throat.
For a moment tears brimmed in his eyes before a rough voice shot through his ears like a bullet.
"You better not start bawling Randle"
Steve didn't even have to look up to recognize his voice.
Timothy. fucking. Shepard.
He had that underlying anger to him just like Dally, yet as he placed a Pepsi next to him Steve felt something he had felt one too many times with Darry. When he finally looked up at Tim, he was sat on the curb sporting a black eye just like him.
"Who?"
Tim didn't respond for a second he was a bit caught off guard at the sudden question.
"My best bud" Tim responded grinning wildly.
Surprisingly Steve grinned right back at him.
"Same here"
Or
Steve gets blamed for something that wasn't his fault and fights his best friend ending up next to Tim Shepard having an odd conversation with matching black eyes and poor Ponyboy being right in the middle of this.

Summary
When he was a child, death fascinated him. It was terrifying, and mysterious, and uncharted, and beautiful. The cowboys riding off into the sunset, the soldiers riding into battle. It filled every inch of the stories he was told. Fairy tales, myths, cowboy ballads-- his father sang him Streets of Laredo as a lullaby every night until he was six. He only stopped because it always made Soda too sad.
He had spent lots of time thinking about death-- anytime he’d look at the stars, it wouldn’t be long until he found himself wondering and yearning for something he couldn’t place. What was beyond them, if anything? What were they made of? Where did they go in the daylight?

Summary
"What was one more questionable choice in a string of such choices made tonight? On second thought, this one was far from his worst—the shot tasted like melted popsicle and went down as easily as the Coke he'd had outside the diner what felt like hours ago. Soda was grinning again when he came up for air.
'Glory, why doesn't all alcohol taste like that?' he said. 'You think the bartender will give me another?' He started for the bar, but Steve grabbed him by the back of his shirt and yanked him back.
'Easy, Soda. At least give it time to reach your stomach.'
Or, Steve takes a reluctant Soda out for his seventeenth birthday, but things don’t quite go according to plan.

Summary
"Two-Bit swept a dramatic hand toward the car as they approached. "Ponyboy, it occurred to me the other day—" It had actually occurred to him just a couple hours ago, while he was trying to think of a good way to get Ponyboy out of the house, per Soda's request— "that I have neglected to teach you an important life skill."
"What's that?"
Two-Bit slung his backpack to the ground and unzipped it, pulling out a flat head screwdriver and holding it up grandly for Ponyboy to see. "It's time you learn how to lift a hubcap.""
Or, just a few months after his parents' deaths, Two-Bit takes Ponyboy out for a crash course in lifting hubcaps. A few months after that, Two-Bit can't help compare that Ponyboy to the stranger who returned to them from Windrixville, and wonders if he'll ever be the same again.
