“He already is,” Jumper interjects, wiping notes off the whiteboard.
“Reassuring.”
Nufuli nods. He gets up to assist her with the words too high to reach, continuing as he does. “She might be right. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with you, but the guy does sprint like a rabbit whenever he sees you enter the room.”
(or, Parrot learns that it’s okay to rely on other people. It takes a while, but thanks to Leo—and the rest of BAT’s—continuous efforts to worm themselves into his heart, he gets there.)

“Yeah. I hope he was.” Leo swallowed to stop his tightening throat, gripping his aching chest. Nufuli had to have been happy because Leo had sacrificed something unnameable for him. His mind flashed back to that specific moment where he stood on the quartz steps, flanked on both sides by Derapchu and Parrot, holding his breath and replacing his words. Instead of saying “please, not you. Anyone but you. You can’t leave me.”, he had lied and wished Nufuli well.
And then he died.
And in that moment, Leo died too, a supernova of grief and yearning for him to come back.
