Summary
Granted, squinting through the dark, Wolfwood takes a moment to make out any details. When his eyes do manage to adjust, Wolfwood has to do a double take, rocking back onto his heels and scrubbing at his eyes before pressing his forehead back into the glass. The flickering streetlamps on his block just barely manage to illuminate the details, not that there are many.
Primarily, what Wolfwood can see is this large, trembling mass of white feathers, just collapsed in the middle of his backyard. Wolfwood stares, trying to remember what he learned from that travelling ornithologist back in high school about the wingspan of birds of prey. Those jackasses actually get pretty big, right? But these extend well beyond what you’d expect from even a bird as large as a bald eagle, spanning almost the entire backyard, nearly fence-to-fence, and they’re curled in around something… bigger. Oblong. Perhaps even man-shaped.

Chapter 7: Like Magic!
“Aventurine, what did you do.”
Coughing over the blare of the fire alarm, Aventurine calls back, “If it isn’t my favorite mage!” He doesn’t bother turning around; one hand waves futilely at the smoke billowing in thick plumes from the scorched workbench while the other futilely covers his nose against the smell of his own consequences. He yanks a stack of reports from a miraculously unscathed filing cabinet and starts fanning the smoke toward the ventilation shaft. “Don’t worry about it.”
