He's met with darkness when he opens his eyes. He also finds ropes around his arms and legs when he tries to move. The movement causes the bullet wound in his abdomen to sting, reminding him about how he got into this predicament—a group of bounty hunters captured him, and judging by the rumbling sound and the ground shaking, they left him in the back of their truck, heading who knows where. There's a sting to the side of his neck, but it's the least of his worries right now.

Closing the door behind him, Wolfwood slaps a hand to cover his nose and scans the room. In his signature red coat and leather pants, Vash is lying on his side on the bed, his travel bag forgotten as it sits in the middle of the room. Stepping closer, Wolfwood realizes the smell is coming from Vash, who is writhing and sweating while dozing. Something in Wolfwood’s brain clicks, eyes widening.
Is Vash in heat?

“What are you suggesting?” Nai mutters. Vash’s scent has changed again, it’s been fluctuating for an hour, dipping from pain, to sadness, to fear. Stomach plummeting scents. It’s driving Nai to insanity.
“I…have an alpha.”
“No-”
“Listen to me, I have an alpha that was hired on a few weeks ago. He’s strange. His scent is strong, but his file mentions a single rut when he hit puberty and then nothing else. I asked of course, thinking it was some kind of lie or misprint. Apparently he was started on a drug way too early that shut down parts of his system.” Legato sighs, Nai can hear him run his hands up into his hair, “it's a lot of medical bullshit, but I have it if you want it. Long story short, he’s an alpha with an all time low aggression.”
“So he’s a ghost?”

Every day he’d walk this way to make sure everything was as it should be. Every day, everything was the same. It was good. By now Nicholas knew he’d take the boring nothing of the day over the consequences of the change. ‘Out of the ordinary’ almost never meant ‘good’.
And his role was to walk the fields, make sure everything was alright, everything was the same and nothing new and unexpected occurred like… a flash of yellow in slowly swaying grains.
Nicholas whipped his head around to where he had seen the movement and tracked the area for anything unusual. There it was. He found it immediately. He found them immediately.
“Hey!” He called out.
The yellow flash didn’t stop and Nicholas swore, giving chase.

Summary
Everything is happening at once: Milly is sobbing, and Wolfwood is laughing and patting her back, and the baby in Meryl’s arms starts squirming and babbling at the sight of Vash, a steady stream of mostly nonsense drawing the attention of all four adults around her.
“Holy shit,” Wolfwood says at the sight, “When did the insurance girls get a–” He cuts off, eyes roaming over the child, clearly taking in her tan skin and dark rumpled hair, the set of her mouth and the shape of her nose, and the way Vash immediately takes her at the fussing, settling her on his hip and shushing her gently.
“Vash,” Wolfwood says, “Vash, I need you to explain. Right now.”
Or, Wolfwood returns from the dead and there's a surprise waiting for him.

"I know."
Wolfwood sighs. "At least try to wean off them," he grumbles. He doesn't want to start an argument while they've got stuff to do.
Vash looks off to the side, gazing at the bottle of pills, lost in thought as he considers the idea. "I'll think about it."

Summary
Because Vash is a nice boy, and doesn't fly off the handle and mutilate his brother on the belief that imperfect things are less loved and he will therefore be allowed to keep them. Knives may not spend a lot of time sniveling, but he is never going to stop feeling bad about all the scars he has put on Vash. Hell, he would be locked up somewhere right now, if not for Vash's begging not to be parted from him and Rem's assurances that she could keep them both safe. And she has, and because of that and because this is what Vash wants, Knives is going to Summer Camp For The Criminally Insane And Their Stupid Siblings. Great.
And of course Vash blubbers when they say goodbye to Rem, and then he's way too excited to talk to everyone else on the bus, and it's hot out and there's no AC and Knives is already greasy with sunscreen and just kill him now, honestly.
With my usual impulse to take Big Serious Angsty properties and turn all the characters into the obnoxious teenagers they act like, we find ourselves here, with the cast of Trigun at a summer residential program for kids with severe trauma.

Summary
A storm brewed six feet under. The snap of lightning muffled his hearing — or was it the feathers that surrounded him and filled his lungs? His eyes burned with tears as he gagged on them, keratin points scraping his throat raw.
Unable to breathe, unable to see, unable to hear, his muscles screamed as he clawed blindly through dust and grit. His body felt as if it was turning to stone as it begged for air. Heat painfully kissed his skin as he broke through the sand, light blinding him. He was grateful for all of it, even as his body seized and he retched plumes and sand.
His fingers triumphantly ripped through dust after he drank in his first breath between violent gags. He couldn't help the way the corners of his mouth twitched upward.
Nicholas D. Wolfwood was going to survive.

She might be younger than him, but they’ve both tried living in that horny world, and each found they were a poor fit for it. So he picks up a curly fry himself and says, pointedly, “There is one person who’d probably be glad to know we’re not together.”
Vash Saverem is the lead singer of popular rock band Stampede. Everyone assumes he and Meryl are sleeping together (they aren't). As they spend more time at the bar Milly and Wolfwood run together, the four of them gradually find even more love and companionship in each other. (Ace Trigun Week 2026, Day Six: Rockstar AU)

Still no answer. Which wasn't unusual per say—sometimes Vash just tuned out for a while, lost in memories or thoughts that were decidedly none of Wolfwood’s business—except for the fact that they were in the middle of a shootout.

Bandits are attacking a Sandsteamer to steal the resident Plant and of course Vash, Wolfwood, and Meryl end up in the middle of it. The whole thing would be much easier to handle if something bad wasn't happening to Vash at the same time.
