“Yeah? Bull riding aint it for you?”
“Nah,” Tyler said, and handed an envelope to Jake. He eyed it for a second before pulling the letter out. For a moment he naively thought that Tyler would be following him to Annapolis. Instead he was met with the Iowa State emblem. “Meteorology? No shit.”
“Got a full ride, they have a rodeo team and I have enough awards. That’s not the end goal though,” Tyler said, “I’m not sitting in a studio room to report on the news. I’m chasing them.”
“What? Like an on the ground reporter?”
“No,” Tyler shook his head and stared up at the sky with a dangerous glint in his eye as lightning lit up the clouds, “tornadoes. I’m gonna chase them.”
“Storm chasing?” Jake snapped and smacked him with the envelope, “Are you insane?!”

" Bradley glanced down at his waking eight-month-old and then back to his godfather, “You wanna hold her?”
“Only if it’s okay with you,” Mav responded tentatively.
“I wouldn’t offer if it wasn’t,” Bradley assured, “Come on, she’s an easy baby.”
Mav held his arms out and Bradley nestled her into his hold. She settled into his chest easily, her small fist coming up to grab hold of the collar of Mav’s t-shirt. Mav stared down at her in awe, “Hi, sweetheart,” he said in that same soft tone that Bradley remembered from his own childhood, “It’s nice to meet you.”
Bradley watched as Nicole’s eyes, already caught somewhere between the green they’d faded into a few months ago and the dark shade of brown that he was sure they’d eventually become to mirror his own, fluttered open and landed on Mav’s face. Her mouth spread in a little smile, a giggle bubbling past her lips. Mav laughed to himself, sheer joy being shared between them both. "

Jake shook his head in confusion, the wider implications of that fact too large and horrifying for him to wrap his allegedly-broken brain around. He waited for Javy to laugh, to start bragging about successfully landing such a bad joke, before explaining what was really going on. Only, the laughter never came.
“It can’t be.”
“It is.”
Though Javy’s expression stayed sympathetic, something in it seemed to harden all of a sudden. Jake was left with the distinct impression that he hadn’t yet gotten to the worst part.
“And, um,” Javy took a breath, “Bradley’s your husband, Jake. You guys have been married nearly five years.”

“I’ve got it,” Jake offers, holding his hand out, but Rooster only tuts disappointedly.
“What kind of host would I be if I made you carry your own bag?”
Jake blanks on a response, his mouth twisting into a smile without his permission. Rooster turns to where Jake can now see the Bronco. Its engine is still running, and it’s warm inside when Jake closes the door behind him, clicking on his seatbelt by feeling along while he stares intently at the glove compartment in front of him, waiting while Rooster puts his bag in the boot. He doesn’t feel as weird as he thought he would, as he probably should. Every conflicting feeling from the F-14 is returning in waves. He’s helpless to resist the pull of the tide. It’s terrifying and exhilarating all at once.

Jake's apartment floods and his only other option is to stay with the last person in the world he wants to spend time with. Shenanigans ensue.

In an instant, he cut himself off, instead allowing his jaw to drop open as he openly gaped at his godson.
“Hey,” Bradley said awkwardly, somewhere between sheepish and standoffish.
“Bradley?” Mav questioned breathlessly, his eyes welling with tears at finally seeing the boy he had a hand in raising after nearly a decade had passed since Bradley left. Since the fight that was the catalyst for so many years of sorrow on both sides. Yet there he was, standing on his doorstep. "

" He runs a hand through his hair and heaves one final sigh before speaking again, “Truth be told kid, I didn’t want to pull your papers, it wasn’t even my idea,” he stares now, somewhere off into the distance, rather than meeting Bradley’s eyes, “It was your mom’s.”
And suddenly, everything makes so much sense in hindsight. Bradley tips his head, running back through the entire conflict from the moment his mom died to the end of the mission, the memories playing out in his mind like a rewound tape. “Huh,” he finally says, something between a sigh and a laugh. "
