"oh uh- I'm the brother. Mom couldn't make it." The stranger grinned at the two of them, lying through his teeth. Leland could tell he was lying, and not just because he was directly affected by the lie. Yet the officer believed him. The officer turned towards Leland, handing him the bag of his belongings, giving him a final pat on the back before walking away. "Oh shit is that you little bro! I hardly recognized you! Well don't just stand there- c'mon!"
The extra lies were just for show, to keep the officer from walking back to them. Against his better judgement, Leland steps towards the car. He watched the stranger's face fall from his previously wide (and very fake) smile, in a more neutral yet sinister grin. "Name's Richard. Get in the car."
"Why?"
"Because."
Leland only blinked at him.

A woman's voice could be heard echoing through a rather large living room. She had been on a call with her ex husband for the last hour trying to coordinate their next court mandated family dinner. He had been against the idea in the beginning. But since his whole (failed) attempt to take over the galaxy and create a new empire, the court didn’t really care what he thought. It was either monthly dinners with his ex and their kids, or rot away in jail. How it was between those two things was anyone’s guess. The court had hoped that some family time would change his ways.
