Hosea could glimpse movement from inside the bank. Bill rushing to the back of the room. Dutch handing the saddlebag over his shoulder off to Micah.
“Eight… seven… six…”
For as long as he had known him, Hosea had known Dutch’s greatest strength and his greatest failing to be one and the same. He was willing to do anything.
“Five… four…”
What would be the consequence this time? What new direction would Dutch send the gang spinning off in? Hosea couldn’t predict it. He never could.

And if that doesn’t hit Arthur like a sucker punch to the gut. He ain’t used to people caring to know him beyond what he puts on the table. Dutch and Hosea have always appreciated his ability to aim and shoot a gun, intimidate a mark, get a job done. Miss Grimshaw is grateful for the chores he does around camp without complaint. And John – well, John’s always just seemed to lap up whatever Arthur is willing to give him. The idea that John wants more – wants to really know Arthur, to see him, a part of him no-one else is interested in, it flares up some kind of unfamiliar fear inside of Arthur’s chest.

Or that Charles would never be able to open up to Arthur, nor anyone else, and would instead continue to live only ever being half-known by those that mattered most to him. Perhaps he had been worried all along, before ever even meeting Arthur, that he’d never again have anyone know him completely and still care, still love him just as he was.
He shook his head, clearing the thoughts away. Even with Arthur’s acceptance, those pains were too large and burdensome to share now. Instead, he finished, “—I wanted to tell you. Reckon you’re the best friend I’ve ever had and I wanted you to know.”

It's intended to be read as a part two/alt ending to my other Jovier fic that's in this series, but can be read alone with the caveat that the relationship between John and Javier is many years established by now. And also very emotionally constipated and full of so many misunderstandings it's probably a world record. It's written in the same format with multiple POVs.
