Thranduil has to sleep every night because he is exhausted from taking care of his kingdom. Legolas is there to watch over him and look after him, since he is one of the few people Thranduil trusts with him sleeping. I see them as much closer than they were in the films and the whole Tauriel ark threw me off. So, Thranduil/Legolas father/son feels with Bard in between because everybody loves Bard!
