Rumi’s jaw trembled. “You think I don’t notice?” she pressed, voice thick with hurt she couldn’t hide anymore. “The way you look at me like I’m… annoying. Like I’m nothing. Like I’ll never be good enough for you.”
“That’s not—” Mira’s voice faltered, snapping off before it could betray her. She clenched her teeth hard enough her jaw ached.
Rumi didn’t stop. She couldn’t—she was unraveling, and she dragged Mira down with her.
“Then what is it?!” Rumi’s nails curled into Mira’s arm, desperate, pleading, furious. “Why do you treat me like I’m the problem? Like I’m the only one you can’t stand to be around? Everyone else gets the part of you that laughs, that smiles, that actually lets people in—but me?” Her breath shuddered. “All I get is this.”
Her voice cracked on this, and it hit harder than any hit they’d thrown.
Mira squeezed her eyes shut, chest trembling. Stop. Please stop. I can’t do this.
But Rumi pushed—because she needed an answer, because she was breaking.
“You hate me so much? Then fine—say it!” she choked. “Say it to my face so I can finally stop wondering why the hell I keep trying with you.”

“She already has a drink,” a voice cut in, calm but edged with steel. A solo cup was pressed into Rumi’s hands, cool against her clammy fingers, and an arm draped around her shoulders like it had always belonged there. “Sorry I took so long, babe.”
Rumi froze. Her heart tripped, scrambling to catch up. The girl in front of her wasn’t anyone she knew. Pink hair fell into her eyes, leather jacket creaking as she settled herself between Rumi and Jinu. Her gaze locked onto him like a homing beacon. Her scent—sharp citrus and a hint of something grounding, clove maybe?—rolled out, cutting the tension like a blade. It was unmistakably an Alpha scent.
A stronger scent.
OR: Mira pretends to be Rumi's mate to get her out of a sticky situation.

“Too bright?” Zoey murmured, crouching beside the stroller. She gently angled the canopy down like she’d done it a hundred times before. “There. That should be better.”
Mira reached down and rubbed the baby’s back in slow circles, her dominant alpha scent going calm and steady, spilling out like a warm blanket. The baby hiccupped, stared up at them, and quieted under the combined presence; curious little fists reached for them, and Zoey cooed as she reached and let the little fingers curl around her own.
Rumi’s fingers tightened around the envelope. Her inner omega was frothing at the bars of her enclosure.
Heavens save her. Her inner omega was practically shouting now. Look at them. Look! Good alphas! Good with Pack! Good with Nest! Pups trust them! Pups feel safe! They are good for pups!
She was so busy staring that she didn’t notice the staff coordinator sidle up next to her until the woman whispered, “They’re naturals, huh?”
Rumi jolted, then laughed, a little breathless. Her patterns flashed bright purple at her embarrassment from being clocked so easily. “Yeah,” she said. “You have no idea.”

The first time it happened - Rumi was four.
Arms wrapped tight around her Celine, the sound of marbles filling the air as she whispered, "I love you."
It was only after that she felt a snap as Celine violently pulled away from her touch as if her presence was poison. The red cord laid limp across the waves of the Honmoon, frayed and burned. Weeping into her palms, Rumi realized the bond of love, the red woven thread that tied her to anyone could be severed so easily.
The second time it happened - Rumi stood across them. On her knees, pleading for her lovers to listen, to hold her, to tell her that - that she is still wanted. Yet the sound of metal hangs heavy in the air, as the blades hummed - pointed sharply at Rumi's chest.
The frayed red cord snaps again - taking the scent of her lovers with it.
