“He's -” He struggles for the words. “We can be shitty to each other but he's -” Good? Kind? Levi isn't sure. He is, he knows objectively, because no one would have gone to the lengths Zeke has for him, spent the money and given the time, if he was not a good man.
“It must be hard for him”, Erwin hums, eyes on his back. “You have achieved more at twenty than he or I will in a lifetime”.
Levi ignores the heat under his cheeks, how viscerally he feels the words in his chest. What does he have to show for it?
“Yeah?”, Levi snorts. “Not sure about that”.
Erwin’s smile is faint, unreadable. “False modesty doesn’t suit you”.
Levi looks away, even as he feels his flush rise, insistent, exhales smoke toward the wet pavement. “Wasn’t modesty. You start believing compliments, you stop getting better”, he mutters.
Erwin steps a little closer, not enough to crowd him, just enough to close the distance between them. There is sadness in his gaze now, enough to make Levi’s hackle raise, enough to make him step back slightly.
“Who taught you that, Levi?”

Summary
Levi’s breath is steady behind him. It seems to always be, even if Erwin knows that’s not the case. He tries to match its rhythm, if only because he hopes it will give some sense of calm to Levi, too; and because he knows he won’t fall asleep before him, not after what they have just gone through. So he breathes in, and out, and tries to will his eyes to stop moving behind his eyelids, and his heartbeat to slow down, even as he thinks, I am running out of time.

Summary
“Don’t die, Levi”, he says, clears his throat. Levi’s brows furrow. “Don’t waste your time trying to save people who are not worth saving. That’s an order”.
Levi looks into Erwin’s eyes, blue and clear and inscrutable. Erwin doesn’t flinch, doesn’t even blink. Suddenly Levi feels his chest expand and tighten with some incendiary, overwhelming fury.
“Worth saving”, he repeats. He keeps his gaze level. He thinks of Furlan and Isabel and feels bile rising in his throat. “Fuck you”.
When he turns this time Erwin doesn’t stop him, doesn’t move. Levi is on his horse before everyone else, patting its neck as it stomps its hooves on the ground, nervous. He watches as Erwin takes the lead right behind Shadis, watches as he tries to say something in his ear. Shadis ignores him, dripping in acrid sweat already. The smell of his panic is nauseating. Erwin does not seem panicked at all. He never does. He should be giving them orders instead of Shadis, Levi thinks, and immediately hates himself for it. Worth saving. He shouldn’t want Erwin to lead them. He shouldn’t want Erwin at all.

Summary
“Can I trust you, Levi?”, Erwin murmurs, after, head to his back and water running cold between them.
He didn’t use to ask, before.
“Who else would you fucking trust”, Levi gets out, skin breaking in goosebumps. Erwin hums behind him.
“Who indeed”, he mutters.
Levi understands anger. He’s intimate with it. He understands Erwin thought a lot of his sacrifice and that to have this opportunity at the expense of all that sacrifice probably feels like an unforgivable sin. It fractured something fundamental between them. Most sacrifices do. Levi did not save him because he saw some hope for them; world peace and a happily ever after. He did it because he knew, in his heart, Erwin was only one black hearted enough to see this through.
Maybe that’s love; to see the absolute worst in someone and see it as salvation, still.
It doesn’t really matter anyway. Erwin is still dying, just slower.

Walker’s jaw sets. His tongue pushes at the skin below his lip. His eyes go from righteous and pleading to a very dark blue.
“Yeah, you’re right, Barnes. I’m not blessed with such a pretty, fuckable face”
