    Summary

Liz is nearly to her third glass of whiskey, slowing down if only to breathe, when her eyes stray towards the couch in the living room, and—

It takes everything in her power to not suck the whiskey up her nose, or drop the bottle on the floor in order to reach for a gun that isn’t there.

The foreign, shadowy shape watching her from the couch is only Thiago.

“What—” Though the whiskey didn’t end up in her nose, thank God, she chokes on the little still sitting in her throat. She squeezes her eyes shut and coughs into her sleeve hard enough that she almost retches.

“Liz?” comes Thiago’s voice, hedged with both confusion and concern. “Are you alright?”

“Fuck—” Liz wheezes for air— “you.” She gulps down another breath, and her hand comes to clutch at the front of her shirt as her heart palpitates in directionless adrenaline. “Jesus Christ. What are you doing here?”

    ~*~

Or, there is a fire raging in Liz Webber's head. And, unexpectedly, a Thiago laying on Liz Webber's couch.

    Summary

Using his probe, Cesar starts poking around the strange robot's broken shoulder joint, moving the wires out of the way to look at everything beneath.

“Well, it’s definitely skycity tech,” he says, once he identifies the components deeper within. He wipes away some of the gunk caked to it with his gloved knuckle—probably some coolant from a burst line mixing with the dirt. It has a rust-colored tinge. “It has to be from Castal. I know I’ve found some human-shaped robots before. None that look like this though. The ones I found were like… They looked like fake people. They had rubbery faces made to look like a human’s, and they were wearing human clothes, or costumes—really creepy stuff.”

Arthur twists the robot's "arm" side to side, looking at the hand’s rigid fingers and floppy wrist joint. “Why would you want to make a robot that looks like a human?”

    ~*~

Or, Cesar and Arthur are residents of the town of Kerana, a close-knit community living their lives in the heart of the Wastes. While out trying to scavenge a robot, detected to have fallen from the neighboring skycity of Castal, they discover something much more peculiar than anything they have ever found before.

    Summary

“What about you? Got your degree in cutting up bodies?”

“Forensics,” Liz specifies to Thiago's teasing grin, “and additional studies in medicine and mortuary science. I got straight to work out of university, too.”

She had studied those things for a reason, after all: To find out, exactly, what happened to her mother, to prove what she’s always known. That car crash was not just a car crash.

    “And before that?” asks Thiago.

Liz twists the glass in her hands, watching the whiskey swirl.

    Before Mom died…

With what little courage the drink provides her, she lifts her eyes to the dark, star-studded blanket above.

“I wanted to be an astronomer,” she admits.

    ~*~

At an unreasonable time of night, Liz and Thiago sit out on the balcony and have a little chat about the path that life has taken them.

(Or, I was recently informed that Liz canonically wanted to be an astronomer before her mom died and IMMEDIATELY had to write a one-shot about it.)

    Summary

“I’m heading into town for groceries in a moment," Aguiar says. "I’ll pick some up.”

    “Okay.”

Jasper, leg still drumming, thinks of being left alone at the house with nothing but the hours, and the forest, and the thoughts of Elisa.

He draws in a deep breath. Asking something can always hurt…but it hasn’t yet with Aguiar. “Can I come with?”

Aguiar takes another slow sip of coffee. Makes a face. He looks at Jasper. “Into town?”

    “Yeah.”

    “Why?”

    ~*~

Or, it's been two and a half months into living with Aguiar. Jasper finally gets an outing.

    Summary

“Tonight’s training,” Aguiar begins, “is very simple. We’re going to spar. But this isn’t going to be about form or consistency. It will be full-on blows. An actual fight. You won’t hold back, and I won’t hold back.”

Aguiar folds his arms across his broad frame, shoulders set. “All you have to do, Jasper, is outlast me.”

    ~*~

Or, it's been a year since Jasper officially started training under Aguiar. Aguiar decides he wants to try something new.

Jasper has his doubts. Aguiar has his expectations.

    Summary

His parents’ routine was just as erratic as their temper. Every morning brought something different. Some days, he woke to peace. Some days, he woke to the screams of the maids. Some days, he woke to a fist in his hair dragging him out of bed, kicking and flailing, to the bathroom, where the tub was already filled to the brim with bloodied water.

These days, though, Jasper always wakes the same way.

His blankets vanish. A rush of cold air washes over him. “Up, Jasper.”

    ~*~

Or, a day in the life of Jasper, now settled into his new "normal" with Aguiar---as much as he can be, anyway, when the ghosts of his old home are still water-logged in his lungs.

    Summary

Blood loss hasn’t hit the same since Aguiar’s first Transcendence, but he’s still sweaty, dizzy, and in a shit-awful mood once all is said and done. He gets back in his car, sitting on black trash bags in an attempt to avoid staining his seats again, and drives his miserable ass home. All he wants to do now is get inside, lick his wounds in peace, and go to bed.

It’s late. In all likelihood, Jasper is asleep. If one thing can go right tonight, let it be that Jasper is asleep.

    ~*~

Or, Aguiar makes a mistake while out on a hunt and gets himself hurt. He can manage the wound, but he's not quite so sure if he can manage to keep all of it hidden from the kid crashing at his house.

    Summary

They’re…gentle with Jasper. They run their fingers through his hair, whisper molasses-dark sweetness in his ear, press soothing kisses over the bites they dot on his neck. He doesn’t understand why. He doesn’t understand how. He knows love hurts, both giving and receiving, and nowhere is that more true than with Remi and Maria.

Love hurts. It has to hurt. If it doesn’t hurt now, it will hurt later. It’s only a matter of time.

It’s agony—days, weeks spent bracing for the blow to finally land. Sometimes, Maria’s smile turns sharp and Jasper tenses, this is it. Other times, Remi clenches his fists and Jasper braces, this is it.

But it never is. Maria’s smile smooths out, Remi releases his fists, and Jasper is left feeling so suddenly bereft that it almost makes him nauseous.

    ~*~

Or, there is something wrong in Jasper's relationship with Remi and Maria: It doesn't hurt.

(OR, Jasper has an ingrained association between love and pain. When his partners don't hurt him, well—he is confused, and eventually, distressed. This leads him to making some questionable choices.)

    Summary

Liz rolls her eyes. “Oh, yes,” she hisses, “why don’t you two say that a little louder, hm? I don’t think the security guard heard you.”

“Relax, Liz—” She bristles. God, she wants to smack him— “after what I told him about the water main, he won’t be back for a while. And besides us, there isn’t a soul around.”

Liz scoffs. “Armed esoterrorist back here, remember?” The lock gives a final click. She swats Thiago’s leg. “Move.”

Thiago leans off the door so Liz can drag it open. “Goodness, my dear. Is there something wrong?”

My shoulder. My stove. My job. My coworkers. My boss. The fact that you’re here even though you still carry yourself stiffly. The fact that Joui is here at all. Liz takes out her flashlight and shines it down the access tunnel. She beckons with a jut of her head. “Come on, let’s get this over with.”

    ~*~

    Summary

    “Agatha?”

Agatha manages a grin that’s more of a grimace. “Hi.”

Mia sighs, her face softening into a sympathy that would probably make Agatha’s skin crawl, if it was coming from just about anyone else. “Ah no… How bad is it?”

“Ehh…” Agatha squints as she shifts her arms, applying a little more pressure into the bleeding wound. Her heartbeat pulses pain in it, echoing up her ribs, and she feels a thin rivulet of blood trickle down her skin. She sucks in a breath through her teeth. “...Been worse?”

    “Agatha that tells me nothing.”

    “I think I popped a stitch.”

“Well, that tells me something.” Mia turns back down the hall. “Wait here, I’ll get the medkit.”

    ~*~

Or, after meeting with her team of agents in the warehouse, Agatha's unhealing wound flares up bad. Thankfully, she knows where to go to get some help.

    Summary

    Something crashes into his side.

Aguiar doesn't even hear it coming. All the air vacates his lungs, and he and the assailant hit the ground. They roll. The sword goes flying. When they come to a stop, Aguiar splayed on his back and his vision spinning, a delicate giggle reaches his ears.

    Figures.

“Well, that’s not very nice of you, my love,” sings X, straddling his waist. “What’s gotten into you, hm?”

    ~*~

Or, during the confrontation with the vampires in the church, Jasper loses himself to the Intentions of Aguiar's mask. This time, it's up to the others to snap him out of it before the Mutilador makes one of them his next victim.

    Summary

“And Aguiar!” Kemi adds. “For the love of God, stop pacing like that! You’ll fuck up your bandages!”

Aguiar has, in fact, been pacing loops around the bottom floor of the mansion for a while. Jae hasn’t paid this much heed until now, what with being preoccupied trying to have a moment with Labi, but their curiosity begins to creep in.

“Aguiar,” Labirinto calls, “what are you doing?”

“Why aren’t you in bed?” asks Jae, arguably the more important question. Cleaned wounds or not, Aguiar looks two blinks away from collapsing where he stands, and there are several perfectly suitable beds for him to collapse into. Jae’s, for example.

    ~*~

Or, after the war against the Couraças and the loss of Dalmo, Jae just wants to go to bed---but some company wouldn't go unappreciated.

    Summary

The agents tell Carina that the archivist of Ordo Realitas is an enigma. Apparently, she is always at the base, but she never leaves her room. Only some of these agents have seen her; none of them are certain of her name. Two went to consult her about some old mission files, and they describe her to Carina as everything from ‘standoffish’ to ‘insane’ to ‘an utter bitch.’

According to these agents, the Order’s archivist is an unnerving, callous woman who practically lives in the archives and is, as far as anyone’s concerned, little more than a ghost. At the same time, they admit that she is the leading expert on their oldest, most sensitive documents, and she routinely assists mission teams with their research.

However, there is one thing that is particularly curious. The agents claim that the only person who seems to talk to her regularly is Arthur. Not the mission teams, not the other researchers in the computer room, not even Senhor Veríssimo. Arthur.

So of course, Carina is terribly intrigued.

    ~*~

Or, after handling the investigation of 'the Devil' in Mato Grosso, Carina finally arrives at the Order base to properly meet her new allies---including the Order's elusive archivist.

    Summary

He only has one hand on the steering wheel.

This fact comes to him delayed. He is too caught up in trying to process the sudden change and not crash the van as the disorientation comes swinging in. But once Veríssimo has oriented himself in space again—dead of night, in the van, empty passenger seats, is he heading away from the Perimeter?—he realizes that he only has one hand on the steering wheel.

And he only has one hand on the steering wheel because the other is cradling a sleeping infant to his chest.

Veríssimo is a Veríssimo. A man of the Order. He has made a life out of facing the horrific, the impossible, and the absurd. There is very little that can shake him these days.

He slams the breaks and pulls over before he can even process what he is doing.

    ~*~

Or, in which Veríssimo leaves the Perimeter, becomes a father, makes a phone call, lies about a hook-up, remembers something that hasn't happened, and nearly crashes a van—not particularly in that order.

Oh, the darkness got a hold on me...

    ~*~

“Are you still in that void? Can you see everything?”

“Void? I’m…” Thiago looks around, to be sure. “No, I-I’m not. We’re…in a hospital? What…”

That is when Liz says the words that Thiago spent an eternity thinking he would never get to hear.

“Santo Berço is gone. It burned down. The parasite god is dead, and none of us can turn into Luzidios anymore. We’re in the hospital of Carpazinha. The rest of the team made it out, too—everyone, the five of us. We’re still here.”

    ~*~

Or, Thiago survives the explosion in the Cave, despite all the odds.

After decades of torment and being scarred in more ways than one, Thiago wants to put Santo Berço and the Symbol behind him—for the sake of his friends, and for the sake of himself. However, nightmares, shaking hands, and an invasive sense of wrongness make this much more difficult than he anticipates.

    Summary

Mia has gotten her feet planted when she sees the doors jolt. Relief floods her as they unjam themselves and slide smoothly open, hitting the insides of the shaft with a reverberating THUNK!

And there, on the back wall of the Containment Zone, she sees it. Thank God for big, glowing buttons.

But Goliath has turned around, claws digging into the earth, and the bulk of its body is blocking the door.

Five seconds. That is as far back in time as the déjà vu radio can take her. So Mia will have five seconds—from the instant before she enters, to the moment she activates the radio—to contain Goliath.

    Now or never.

Mia forgets her fear and charges forward.

    ~*~

Or, Mia finally has everything she needs to contain Goliath and see what it has been guarding all this time. Now it's just a matter of execution. What could possibly go wrong?

Higher brain function fucking blows. Thiago can't be assed to come up with anything. Especially if he has to argue about it. And Liz is going to want to argue about it. He needs something irrefutable.

Hm. A feeling curls in him, delighted.

This is a bad idea, Thiago thinks right as he leans over and smacks a kiss on Liz’s cheek.

Still, it has been a long, tiring day. It ended with their team fighting off a horde of creatures and running all the way across Santo Berço to get to the hotel. Everything the Hotelier said has made Liz uneasy, but really, all she wants now is to get some sleep.

Except someone won’t stop tossing around.

Liz drops her arm over her eyes and groans. “Thiago, for the love of God, would you please stop moving? You make the mattress jump every time you flip over.”

    Summary

Her own blood is oozing through her fingers. It’s spilling fast, sand through an hourglass. Liz knows the physical side effects of blood loss; she has seen countless corpses bled dry in her time, too. Dizziness to shock to unconsciousness to death. She is all too aware that she is short on time.

“I don’t know what to do,” Joui blurts. She can feel him shaking, see his chest heave as hard as her own. His voice is frantic, tight. “You’re—There’s too much bleeding— I swore I wouldn’t let this happen again—”

“I’m not going to die, Joui,” Liz cuts him off.

Because it’s true. Liz can’t die. She has to take care of the others so they aren’t killed by this wretched work too, and she can’t do that if she’s dead herself.

So Liz won’t die. She can make sure of that.

    First step: stop the bleeding.

    Summary

There is a dangerous sort of wistfulness tugging at Thiago as he watches the boy go—hazy-edged memories of his own escapades with his friends as a kid, far too distant now—so he looks back at the corner store's drink selection.

As he makes his choice of beers, his phone buzzes. Thiago sets down the cases and checks. A text from Liz: “Where are you?”

Thiago taps out a reply: “Took the scenic route, be there soon”

Two checkmarks, and an answer: “Ok” “No rush”

Thiago cracks a brief grin, hearts the last message, and pockets his phone again.

    ~*~

Thiago doesn’t actually know what age he is anymore. He lost decades in the Cave, that much he can tell. The lines of his face say fifties, the white in his hair says sixties, and the blast scars muddy the rest of the details.

When making his falsified documents, the Order put him down as fifty-seven and left it at that. That’s good enough for Thiago. Best not to think about it too hard.

    ~*~

Or, sometime between the bad and the worse, Thiago has a good day.
