Summary
To Yolanda’s horror, the cabin they pulled up to as her phone announced that they’d arrived at their destination looked more like something out of a horror movie than the quaint photos online.
“Um, did you bring me here to murder me?” Trinity asked from the passenger seat. She was joking, but there was an actual thread of hesitancy there. Yolanda knew it wasn’t directed at her, but rather the situation in general.
When a carefully planned getaway doesn't work out quite as expected, it somehow turns out even better than Yolanda could've imagined.

“Garcia went nuts on McKay.”
Trinity leaned against the kitchen island and shrugged. “She’s…” She wasn’t hot-tempered, was the thing. She didn’t get in many fights, especially if it wasn’t her who’d been wronged. “She’s protective. I guess.”
Dennis quirked an eyebrow. “Okay. Hot.”

"Jesus, I get it, you think she's hot," Whitaker mutters. "But how exactly is she unavailable? She practically lives at our place."
"That's the problem," Santos grouses. "She's always at our place."
"I'm not following."
Santos gives him a look that is simultaneously miserable and condescending. "She's never brought me home, Whitaker."
Or: in which Dennis Whitaker fails to mind his own business.

Summary
Santos holds up her hands and shakes her head and takes another step back. “I haven’t spoken to your wife,” she emphasizes. “All I know is you hurt your head. Just—please try to calm down, sir, we’re going as fast as we—”
“That’s bullshit,” he snaps. “I didn’t do anything. She’s lying.”
He’s getting way too close and the adrenaline has Santos stammering around words she hasn’t come up with yet—
“I’ll be right back,” she blurts and turns around—
A strong hand clamps around her wrist and pulls—
“Let go of me,” Santos demands as she reaches for the privacy curtain—

Summary
Most of Samira's life had been a masterclass of repression. Pushing down her wants in order to focus on her plan, her goals, was Samira’s area of expertise and she was suddenly so utterly exhausted by it. She’d spent years denying herself of her physical and emotional cravings and for what? At this point, she was pretty confident that her career would still be in the same place regardless of whether she was having sex regularly.
She wanted this, wanted Emery, so badly that she felt like she might explode if she couldn’t have it.
A typical post-shift hangout turns into Samira (finally) deciding to go after what she wants. And Emery is what she wants.

“I don’t think your girlfriend likes me very much,” The patient says, words slurring as he gestures towards the curtain lazily. "The mean surgeon chick who was just here. Dartmouth lady. Your girlfriend. She seems pissed. Are you guys fighting? Or is she always like that?
Samira doesn't mind working on New Year's Eve, mostly because it gives her an excuse to avoid going out. What she does mind is the number of drunk patients who throw up on her, the drunk patients who assume she and Emery Walsh are together because of a shared hoodie, and the drunk patients who demand she and Walsh kiss when the clock hits midnight.

Summary
She talks to Kylie’s dad.
She throws up in the nearest bathroom.
She goes to her locker for a cube of spearmint to distract herself from her own nervous system, picks up the plastic container, and even with her hand trembling around it she hears big fat nothing rattling around inside.
Pitches it sideways toward the trash can and misses by a lot, listens to the container clatter against the floor, leaves it where it lands.
Her mouth still tastes like bile, which tastes like fear and shame, which keep getting stuck in her chest as she plants her palms against the adjacent lockers and tries to breathe.
“Dr. Santos?”
She full-body flinches and her lungs catch loudly and she otherwise stays absolutely still.

Summary
“Look… I’m offering,” Santos doubles down. “I can drive you home. It’s really not a big deal. No problema.”
That earns a breathless, barely-there laugh from Garcia for some reason, and after a visible deep breath in and out she shifts onto her back to look at Santos, and her cheeks are wet.
“Shit,” Santos mutters,”how long have you been stuck in here?”
“Not long enough, apparently.” Garcia hesitates again before wincing through a wave of pain. “It’ll pass. I’ll be fine.”
But Santos just gives her a look. “Seriously, what's the point of lying to me when you could just let me help?”
Garcia sort of rolls her eyes, but they’re bloodshot and too glassy and the next blink releases a tear that she quickly swipes away.
(They haven't spoken since the Langdon incident, and now Garcia's having a migraine attack, and it turns out they didn't completely destroy whatever This is.)

“Hang on,” Emery said. When Samira turned back, the look Emery was giving her sent a shiver up her spine. “I could help you out.”
There was no way she meant what Samira thought she meant, it had to have been the sleep deprivation eating away at her brain. No way that Emery Walsh was propositioning her at seven-thirty in the morning outside of the PTMC. “What? You can’t mean—”
Emery took a step closer, “I think you know exactly what I mean. You’re a smart woman Samira. Take it or leave it. No hard feelings either way.”
“Why are you offering this?” Samira couldn’t wrap her head around it.
“After the night we just had, I could also use some stress relief.”
Samira lets someone take care of her for once.

"What's your mom's weakness?" Jack asks in a whisper, holding his glove up to his mouth so no one can make out their conversation.
"She's allergic to bees?"
"I'm not trying to kill her, Javadi. I just want to strike her out!"
Or,
Jack Abbot has been in charge of the emergency department’s slow-pitch roster since he arrived at the Pitt.

“Good?” she asks. Samira nods quickly.
“Oh, my god, yes,” she says, taking another bite but shoving it in her cheek to add, “I think I can die happy now.”
“Let’s hold off on that one for a little while,” Emery laughs, leaning her elbows on the counter. They eat over the counter, not bothering to move to the table, and Samira doesn’t regret skipping their reservations. This is infinitely better. “Oh!” Emery says over a bite, eyebrows shooting up. “I have something for you,” she mumbles, bringing her hand up in front of her mouth.
Samira celebrates her 28th birthday with Emery.

It hadn’t come as a surprise to either of them when Samira eventually drifted over to Emery’s side, a pleasant, neutral smile on her face as she sipped her Chardonnay and asked in a low voice, bringing the glass to her lips, “When do you want to go?” They were in the car five minutes later.

“Fine,” Samira scoffs, turning away, a shy smile on her lips. “But if you’re about to go into your rut, which I know for a fact you are because your scent has been haunting me all day, I’m happy to help out. As a… professional courtesy.”
The last thing Emery Walsh expected when leaving work early to deal with an unexpected rut was for Samira Mohan to catch her in the parking lot and offer a helping hand.
