Javier closed his eyes tight and pressed his face close to his pillow. He paid close attention to his breathing, in and out. In and out. He tried to focus only on that in hopes that he could get some sleep, any bit of sleep and stop thinking about everything else. It worked for maybe a minute before a gnarled face formed behind his eyelids and they shot open, his heart racing in his throat as he stared across the dark room at the window of the apartment. There was that faint orange glow from the street lights outside. He could hear cars drive by occasionally. It was usually soothing. But right now every little sound set him on edge, made the hair on the back of his neck stand up and he couldn’t sleep.
He’d been trying to for over an hour and it wasn’t working.

Spitting out dirt and grass when he lifts his head, Arthur’s trying again to roll aside, kick off the rope, but Marston ain’t giving him no slack. He keeps pulling it tight to hold the tension and tugging it to keep him off balance. “The hell you think you’re doing, Marston?” he demands, hands digging into the earth to stop from being dragged back by the next insistent tug.
“Ain’t it obvious?” John mulls, boot pressed down on Arthur’s side. He pushes his luck by his chuckle, then kicks him back down into the dirt, drops his knee hard in the middle of his back to pin him there.
“Obvious that you’s of a mind to get your ass beat halfway through Sunday,” he spits back, pushing up against his weight. John grabs his arm at the elbow, pulls it back behind him and the plan, in all its half-brained glory, comes clear in his head.

Kieran Duffy, former O’Driscoll boot boy, whistling across the Clemen’s Point pasture. Like he’s calling a dog, except it’s Arthur, hat tilted down, making his way careful through the muck. Walking towards Kieran, following him back past the tree line, into the woods.
After a few paces, Kieran turns around. He doesn’t need to; Arthur’s following, of course, but some part of him likes to watch him come at his call. He walks right into an oak tree, back against the bark, and decides that’s a fine enough place to stop. “Mr. Morgan.”
“Mr. Duffy.” Arthur answers.
(The prompt: Arthur might be into getting ordered around (and being a good boy and following orders right) and Kieran might be into it, too.)

As they get older, the cons get more serious and the consequences more significant. Nathan gains a reputation as a vicious psycho who enjoys hurting people - he only does what he has to, but that serious and intense side of him makes him very good at convincing threats.
When Duke wins the Cape Rouge, they leave Haven together, taking whatever work they can get, honest or not, and scamming and conning and smuggling their way around the world.
