He picked the phone back up and pressed it to his ear.
“Good night, Samira.”
He hadn’t intended it. His voice was still gravelly from stolen sleep. The lowered volume to accommodate the closeness of the microphone. The good night of it all, the last words offered to a person at the end of the day, reserved for the last person they see—it was devastatingly intimate.
Jack Abbot was no coward. So he had no earthly explanation for why he snapped his cell phone shut with a sound so sharp the cat slunk from the bedroom, before he could hear what she might have said back.

But if she could have anything, just one thing for the rest of her life, it would be having Percy at every moment. He’ll always be there, even if he isn’t physically present. That sort of faith in a person should deter her, but she’s had years to accept it. Loving Percy isn’t a choice, but more so a fact of life.

It’s a tell he has. Something he never quite managed to work through or tame, blame it on the years spent running towards certain death.
He has broken a few pitchers, numerous water fountains, his mom’s bird feeder one time. Messed with the camp’s plumbing enough to be persona non grata around the shower area and has been steering clear of sewer grates, just in case. It’s fine, really. Nothing he can’t handle.
But when Annabeth takes a seat next to him with what looks like a brick but really is a cake, Percy suddenly wishes he’d taken the time to try.
Percy's powers sell him out with every emotional turmoil, for better or worse. A rewrite of Percy and Annabeth's first kiss, based on the Last Olympian.

Percy flattened his hand on her waist. He relished the immediate warmth that seeped from beneath her shirt. In case she felt cold again, he moved his hand downward and up again in hopes that it could warm her up more.
Annabeth let out a low sigh and burrowed backwards into his front. His hand slipped down until his fingers were pressing into her tummy. She didn’t say anything or undo her move. In fact, her breathing started to slow.
