Veronica goes for his gun; a rush of footsteps, a blur of her hair and blue fabric; she grabs it from the waist of J.D.’s jeans. She has the handle in both hands, the barrel staring him down before he can grab her wrists.
“Shut off the detonator!” Veronica orders.

J.D. stares at the digits blinking at him, watching the timer. He doesn’t shift his gaze when Veronica shuffles forward. He doesn’t look at her when the barrel of his own gun hits the centre of his chest.

Veronica is off on her timing. One minute before she would have been able to fool J.D. into thinking she was dead, he climbs up to her window and catches her. The conversation goes contrary to expectations.

I just watched Heathers (1988) and desperately needed to write an ending wherein J.D. is persuaded not to blow up the school.

After surviving the whole bomb situation at Westerberg, JD and Veronica try to go back to normal, and part of that means learning to spend the night apart—normal seventeen year olds do that. they're not constantly climbing in each other's windows. They don't even have to wonder if their partner is dead when they're not sleeping side by side.
It's a shame neither JD, nor Veronica is quite normal.
There’s a knock at the window.
It doesn’t startle her when she awakens, only confuses her—normally he’s earlier. The clock is reading 2:36 AM, when she opens the window, and sees a shadow creep in in the darkness of her room. “You’re late,” she jokes, keeping her voice to a whisper. She can’t wake her parents, or they’ll have to stop. She’s not ready for that.
And then she takes his hand, to pull him in. He’s cold. He’s shaking, “you asked me to sleep at home,” he reminds her, “remember? Exam tomorrow—or, fuck, I guess it’s today now.” He forces a laugh, even if neither of them find it funny—there’s an edge to it, not like he’s angry, nor like he’s slipping, but like he’s tacked these words over harder ones, and a corner is peeling up.

She's got something in her that makes you feel weak, soft, hers. Like you've been running for hours and your muscles can't keep up. And it turns you on. You don't know why you can only get off when there's a power imbalance involved. There's probably something fucked up about that, but then, you've known for a while that you got messed up somewhere along the line.
But god, you'd worship her if she asked it of you. She brings you to your knees. Like right now. She's on your couch; your dad is out, and won't be back until later. She's on your couch, with a hand in your hair and you between her legs.

“Anyway, I don’t feel sorry for you,” she declares after a moment, like she hasn’t just caused his brain to shoot out the top of his head like the cap on a bottle of fucking mentos and Coke. “You’re actually pretty lucky, when you think about it. What if you’d had to read The Great Gatsby at every high school you’ve been to? Ten times in four years.”
“Oh,” JD says without thinking, “then I definitely would have turned to homicide earlier.”
Fortunately, a little surprisingly (possibly to both of them), Veronica laughs.
Noted, JD thinks with relief, as he slides an arm around her waist, grinning and reaching for the mixing bowl with his other hand. Nice to know pretending to be normal has its limits.(Baking brownies, going bowling, and other attempts at being a normal couple of seventeen-year-olds in love.)
