So, he hides the fact and kills when he can't bare the dire hunger that settles at night. Deep down, past killing and driving himself crazy, Gerard wants to protect. He wants to keep everything in place, keep his little brother safe. However, Mikey is too sheltered by his older brother to notice it all, to naive to it until it is far too late for him.
