“Hey, remember when you used that little lizard to boil some water?” Yennefer grunted in response, and Jaskier watched the shadows of Nilfgaardians growing closer. He let his face fall into her hair. “Hear me out.”

Stuck between a rock and a hard place (read: Nilfgaard or death) and Yennefer without her chaos, Jaskier struggles for options. Remembering that mages can exchange one thing for another-- burning up a whole person to fuel their magic, for instance-- he comes up with a brilliant plan. Only one of them will make it out, sure, but he'd rather it be her.
For normal reasons. Not love, or anything like that.

She drinks it in one gulp. “You had ale.”
His eye twitches despite himself, and she laughs. Grumbling, he pulls himself to his feet, dizzy from the sudden change in position. “Fiiiine.”

After a long and stressful week of traveling on the run, our favorite found family finally finds an inn to spend the night in. Geralt had immediately collapsed on the bed, Ciri close behind, but now she was snoring, loudly. With both their lover and their not-actually-a-daughter fast asleep, Yennefer and Jaskier have a night to themselves. And what are they gonna do? They're gonna dance.

Lambert is hit with shrapnel from a blast. The ever-suffering Triss runs over to help. It's, maybe a little worse than she was expecting, and sometimes getting caught up in the moment means owning up to your inconvenient affections.

Jaskier plopped himself down onto the log to her right. “So, why’re you up?” Yennefer asked, bumping her shoulder against his gently.
“Oh, you know. Definitely not debilitating nightmares,” he replied, craning his neck to look up at the stars, the moon, the peaceful night that had given him no peace. He swiveled his gaze back to Yennefer; she looked so, so tired. He wanted to take her face in his hands, run his fingers through her hair, take away that weight, just— no, stop. Dangerous line of thought. “What about you?”
“Oh, definitely not debilitating nightmares either, no.”

Jaskier awakens from a nightmare to find Geralt and Ciri asleep, but no sign of Yennefer. When he finds her, sat on a log, they talk about their dreams. Jaskier has some insights. Yennefer sheds some tears. They find every excuse to put their hands on each other.

Jaskier gets a concussion during the battle of Voleth Meir. While he's unconscious, Yennefer tries not to let her anxiety run away with her, Geralt accidentally eavesdrops, and the two realize their priorities are one in the same.

“Can’t afford it,” Geralt grunted.
“It’s not that expensive to rent a bed -” Jaskier started.
It stings to have it pushed in his face that his life isn’t normal, so far beyond normal that someone like Jaskier can’t fathom it.
“It’s expensive to rent a private room,” Geralt couldn’t keep the snarl out of his voice. “Or do you think anyone wants to sleep near a witcher?”
When Geralt meets Jaskier in Posada, he is jaded, bitter and so lonely some days he thinks he might kill him. Jaskier is young, bright, and not afraid of tarnishing his reputation by standing by a witcher.
Years later, Geralt repays the kindness.
