Cliff Marlow “You and Hollander, Rozy. I knew that Montreal girl worked you up. I didn’t know it was Shane Hollander. Good for you, bro! Hit that!”
Shane, hearing everything, raised his eyebrows. Ilya frowned.
“Don’t say hit that, Marly.”
“Yeah, well. I know we’ve kind of lost touch a bit, but…I just wanted you to know I support you. Ok?”
Shane and Ilya made eye contact, and Ilya was surprised to find how happy this made him. He hadn’t really given Cliff Marlow much thought since leaving Boston. But he couldn’t deny that it was nice to hear from him, and to hear support coming from him too.
“Thanks, Marly.” Then, after a second, he said, “Next time we play in Boston, let’s grab a beer.” Something he had avoided doing since he left Boston.
“You got it, Roz. Best captain ever! I’ll let you go, but I’m in your corner, man. Fucking beautician!”
“That was nice,” Shane said kindly after Ilya hung up. “Well, for the most part.”
“Yeah,” said Ilya quietly. “It was.”

Shane returns from the showers to find the locker room far more animated than when he left it. Everyone has their phones out, and when he sees Shane coming, JJ says, “Câlisse, Hollander, about fucking time! Ilya Rozanov got caught kissing a man.”
After the tuna melt debacle, but before Rose, Ilya makes the reckless decision to go to a gay bar to take his mind off of Shane. When photographs get published, Shane has a realization and devises a plan: he's going to ask Ilya Rozanov to marry him.
Ilya's going through enough without things he can't have being dangled in front of him. He needs to figure out a different way to avoid going home, a plan that doesn't involve Shane Hollander realizing what Ilya already knows: that Ilya isn't worth what Shane wants to do for him.

“It is,” Ilya said.
His hand came up, thumb settling beneath Shane’s jaw and tilting his face upward. The touch alone sent a shiver through him.
“You are too young,” Ilya murmured. “You are going to get me into trouble.”
Shane barely had time to breathe before Ilya leaned in.
Shane Hollander has made a lot of mistakes in his life. Getting pregnant by a married Russian man twice his age is easily the worst one.

Sometimes, Shane thinks, Ilya is like a nosy little puppy. An absurdly handsome, terrifyingly competent puppy. “I am never showing my face in this house again,” he declares. “I’m going to move into a remote cave and live there for the rest of my life. No internet. No family dinners. Just me and my shame.”
Ilya flops down beside him on the bed, the mattress bouncing, and wraps a teasing arm around his waist.
“As long as I get to live in cave with you, no problem,” he says, nuzzling into Shane’s shoulder before tugging him down into a kiss.
