On the other end of the line, Hayden went still for a moment. For long enough that it started to stress Shane out. So, naturally, he started sputtering into the speaker.
"Or do you think I shouldn't? Oh no, did he say something in the locker room I didn't hear? Hayden do you think J.J. could be homophobic?? Like, I don't think he would be but I don't know actually and I'm—"or

Apparently that was decidedly not what J.J wanted to hear. The expression that Shane maybe interpreted as 'shocked' and 'slightly irritated', morphed into one that was definitely 'angry'. Shane felt a stone settle in his stomach as he realized that this was it. He was losing J.J's friendship.
Or,
Shane tells J.J that his unrequited crush is actually a reciprocated relationship, and Shane cannot for the life of him figure out why this makes J.J. so pissed at Hayden.

Shane felt sick to his stomach as he heard noises of agreement. He looked at J.J. - the only other person of colour in the room - and saw the distant horror reflected in his eyes. It's a different sort of privileged trauma to be third-generation Canadian, to have established roots in the country but people still assume you weren't born here. The generational trauma is softer - the edges not sharp enough to make you bleed only bruise - but it was ingrained into their family in ways that others wouldn't even realize.

The beginning of the end doesn't start with a bang, but with a small sigh. Shane and J.J. are two of the few men of colour in the MLH; that's not something they ever forget.
