Cassian lands first, Azriel following close behind. They’re both in their leathers, both clearly having come straight from Windhaven. Cassian’s face breaks into a grin when he sees her, sees the gathering, and something about that unguarded joy makes her throat close up.
“Well, isn’t this nice,” he says, striding inside with that easy confidence she used to find thrilling. “A family gathering and nobody told me?”
He crosses to where Nesta stands with Nyx, and before she can brace herself, he’s there, solid and warm and overwhelming. His hand comes to rest on the small of her back, familiar and possessive, and he presses a kiss to her temple that she feels like a brand.
“Hey, sweetheart,” he murmurs against her hair. “Miss me?”

Nesta hasn’t heard the sound of a voice—familiar or otherwise—in five days. Not since Cassian slammed the balcony doors behind him on his way out after a particularly nasty argument, wingbeats like thunder retreating into the clouds.
It seems that all she can do these days is anger the ones around her.
She hasn’t left the House of Wind in two weeks. She hasn’t been allowed to. Not since Rhysand told her, voice black with rage, “If it wasn’t for Feyre, if you weren’t my brother’s mate, I would have had you executed for what you did.”
Not since Amren said she belonged in one of the cells beneath the Court of Nightmares, because, “Some monsters don’t stay tamed, no matter how hard you try to civilize them.”

She wears power suits to her editing job at Velaris Publishing, her hair is always immaculately styled, her apartment has been featured in a “Young Professionals Living in Style” blog post, and she’s been in a relationship with Tomas Mandray—successful lawyer, conventionally attractive, wholly appropriate—for three years.
Past tense on all of that.
Because yesterday, she’d come home early from a work trip to surprise Tomas, only to find him very enthusiastically not surprised, and very enthusiastically occupied with his paralegal, Claire, in their California King bed with the Egyptian cotton sheets Nesta had picked out.
The bed that Tomas had paid for, in the apartment that Tomas’s name was on the lease for, because Nesta had moved in with him eight months ago, instead of looking for a new place together.

She doesn’t turn. Doesn’t move.
The bond in his chest is screaming. Her emotions crash over him in waves—despair, worthlessness, exhaustion, and underneath it all, a terrible calm. The calm of someone who’s made a decision.
“Step down.” His voice comes out harder than he intends. The voice of a general. But inside, he’s begging for her to listen.
“Go away.” Her voice is hollow. Empty. Nothing like the sharp, cutting tone he’s used to. Nothing like the fire he’s always admired.
This is worse than her anger. It’s defeat.
“No.” He takes a careful step closer, hands out like he’s approaching a spooked animal. “I’m not leaving.”
“I don’t want you here.”
“I don’t care.” Another step. The bond is pulling tight in his chest, urging him closer. Keep her safe. Keep her alive. “I’m not leaving you alone.”
He feels a flicker of something. Confusion, maybe. Or frustration that he won’t just let her do this.
“Please,” she whispers, and the word breaks his heart. “Please just go.”
“Not a chance, sweetheart.”
