Summary
Set after Mac and Jack are discharged from the army, and are working at DXS but before they meet Nikki. They're are called onto a mission to retrieve top secret files from an abandoned shack in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness. They run into a number of problems during their backpacking trip including falling through ice, getting caught in a blizzard, and nearly starving. The good thing is Mac grew up in the forest and he loves camping and wilderness survival, but the bad thing is the Alaskan wilderness isn't quite like Northern California. The even worse thing is Mac and jack haven't been working together at DXS for very long and despite their time working together in the army, they don't quite know how the other works yet. They're going through some stuff right now okay? And Mac has major trust issues so that's not helping.

“Ilya Rozanov,” Shane repeats slowly, letting himself taste the words. He grins. “Wow. You’re, like, a really good player. How come you’re in Canada for summer camp? Is that weird to ask? Sorry if that’s weird. I just meant-”
Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes.
“Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.”
“Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away.
“Is okay. Slow words. Okay?”
This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia. Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends.
It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.

"We're setting you up with a billet situation," Fletcher continued. "It's pretty common for first-year players, especially international guys. Gives you a chance to settle in, learn the city, have someone looking out for you."
"Okay," Ilya said slowly, not entirely sure what a billet was, but not wanting to admit his ignorance.
He could guess from the context – he’d heard of rookies being assigned to live with older single players, veterans who could show them the ropes. Maybe that was what Fletcher meant. Connors maybe, he was probably a handful of years older than Ilya. Or perhaps Becker. Ilya just hoped it was someone who–
"You'll be staying with Nikolai Petrov and his family."
The words hit Ilya like a punch to the gut. For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.
"Petrov?" he managed, his voice coming out strangled.

Summary
Being captured wasn’t new. In fact, it was almost routine to Alex Rider. Capture, threats, pain. Old hat. Even the mind numbing hours of isolation were bordering on routine.
But this was new. Alex doesn’t know how he’s going to take care of this kid, doesn’t know how he’ll keep a terrified six year old safe from their captor. But he knows he doesn’t have a choice.
