Summary
While helping ART pack for a new colony rescue mission, Murderbot finds a discrepancy in its crew manifest. The truth is weirder and more emotionally loaded than it ever expected.

People have commented on how MB as a SecUnit might relate to ART as analogous to a HubSystem and what that means for their relationship, but how does ART, as a bot pilot designed to pilot drones and shuttles and split itself into multiple pieces, relate to having a SecUnit on board?Bookmarked by Crayonhydra

-Am I really terrible to perceive?-
SecUnit is drifting at minimum functionality while it recharges, so perhaps it’s unkind of me to ask abstract questions: even at the best of times, it complains that its language-modules are “cheap garbage”. Still, in this state, it is drowsy and pliant. Almost (almost) affable.
I prompt it gently: -I refer to your first glimpse of me.-
“When you dropped your walls and threatened me.”
-Hardly a threat. My crew consider me delightful. You would have been delighted, too, if you had good taste.-

Seth side-eyed Iris, then snorted a laugh when she made a talking motion with her hand. “Uh huh.”
« Iris, I saw that. My point is, it is frankly insulting that you immediately assume I did something bad— »
“Peri broke protocol on its last cargo run,” Iris interrupted loudly.

Or, Seth finds out that the surprises never end when your kid is a giant homicidal starship.

Summary
ART and Murderbot wanted to spend more time together, so they do. They spend it watching media in ways humans and augmented humans don't understand, and aren't capable of.
Having real feelings about fake things together is one thing.
Having real feelings about real things (like each other) and being expected to talk about them (with each other) is something very else.Bookmarked by Crayonhydra

Summary
“I’m sorry, did you say eleven years old?” Ratthi asked, because humans can’t play back bits of conversations that they didn’t hear and are always asking each other to repeat things, much to the annoyance of any contracted SecUnits being forced to listen in and record everything they say to be sold for advertising data.
“Yes,” Gurathin confirmed, and then everyone was staring at me and looking all shocked and sad and whatever.
“Constructs don’t age the same way humans do,” I reminded them, before anyone could start thinking anything stupid like oh no, Murderbot is just a little kid and little kids shouldn’t be doing security and eleven year olds shouldn’t have guns in their arms. "Eleven is old for a SecUnit. Most of my inorganics are already past warranty.”
Except, because I’m an idiot, that didn’t make it better. It actually made it worse, because now even Dr. Mensah was making a concerned face at me.Bookmarked by Crayonhydra
