Summary
Castiel slips from his chair to kneel at Dean’s feet. He takes Dean’s hands in his, and there on the floor holding something with devotion, he understands Communion. He understands Eucharist. He understands believing in someone so deeply that to shelter a piece of them within yourself is an act of untempered faith, love and prayer and deep-wide trust.

Summary
After they stop Chuck, Dean and Sam make a promise: one more attempt at bringing someone back, but then that's it, no more screwing around with the universe. The universe isn't done screwing around with them, though, and the Cas that the ritual produces is a real blast from the past. And what is Dean supposed to do? Sacrifice another Cas?
Of course, the alternative is learning to live with this new-old-Cas, and all their combined grief, and all the feelings that he'd been ready to tell his Cas.

Dean does a spell to get Cas back from the Empty--and instead pulls out endverse!Cas. Pulls at the emotions, but I end up with mostly negative emotions. Dean choosing this Cas over the possibility of getting *his* Cas back? Sorry, ugh. True, there's an emotional dilemma, but I don''t care: I'd want Dean to want his realCas back, not this version.

Dean gets to spend eternity sharing beers with Bobby on the Roadhouse porch and riding around in his Baby with Sam. He’s at peace… or he feels like he should be. But a few things nag at him: Where is Cas, and everybody else Dean had been hoping to see in Heaven? Why does he feel like he’s stuck in a loop, reliving the same memories over and over again? And who are the strangers wearing Sam’s and Bobby’s faces?

It's Dean who's taken by the Empty in 15x18, to make Cas suffer. Ch 2 is particularly good. As typical, there's sex stuff to skim over.

Summary
Freedom.
Dean rolls the word around on the tip of his tongue and tastes how it feels. Freedom.
It’s a strange concept, especially since he always assumed that he was. Ever since Apocalypse Version 1.0 was averted, Michael and Lucifer locked in the cage, thanks very much, he’s always assumed that he was the one calling the shots. No matter how badly he fucked up (and he fucked up a lot), he could at least take comfort in the fact that those were his choices. No one’s hand up Dean Winchester’s ass, no siree.
And then Chuck came and ripped that certainty away from him in one quick motion and then...everything was suspect. Sam, Mom, Jack...Cas. Every word, every action, every emotion... He couldn’t trust anything, so he trusted nothing.

Bookmarker's Notes
Cas's final resurrection
In the wake of the horrible episode, we needed something soft and wonderful. And I'm sorry, but it just quite simply does not make sense that Dean would allow Cas to rot in the Empty without trying to rescue him. And it was also important to me that it was DEAN making the decision to go after Cas. So many times Cas has left and he thought that Dean didn't care, so Dean had to be the one to choose to rescue Cas. He had to choose to show Cas that he would save him. "I left, but you didn't stop me" ends right here! Right now!

Summary
“The natural environment of the human soul is a human body,” Cas says. “Humans have yet to meet a foreign substrate that they don’t immediately attempt to colonize. My form in Hell was not an exception.” Then he shuts his mouth very deliberately and gestures back to Dean like his mic is going live in three, two.
“Or the bit where my soul gave you some kind of STD?” Dean finishes.
“It was a poor analogy. I apologize.”
“So what’s a better one?”
Castiel drums his fingers for a second. “It’s more like…the way a parasitic jewel wasp injects a cockroach with venom, and transforms it into a willing host for wasp larvae.”
“Holy shit are you ever bad at this,” Dean says, with that signature brand of fond horror he special-orders just for Castiel, Angel of the Gourd.

Summary
For a long time, Castiel thought that every earthly possession other than the immediately necessary was excess to requirement. But Dean – Dean who named his car, who keeps a photograph of his mother in his wallet, some thirty-plus years after her death, who still has the crumpled ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign with a sleeping pelican emblazoned on it from the Microtel outside of Roanoke where he first kissed Castiel, clumsy and unsure, under the unsteady fluorescence of an exhausted bathroom bulb – is sentimental.
It puzzles Castiel, where Dean draws the line between what is meaningful and what it is worthless.

Summary
He is trying not to be a burden, so he follows Dean’s instructions.

Bookmarker's Notes
Cas, after Lucifer's possession
Cas coming out of dissociation:
Cas is not in a position to argue, but he is having trouble understanding what Dean wants him to do. He’s still waiting to find out what Dean intends to do with him. He says, “Lie down where?”Dean rolls his eyes. “The bed, Cas,” he says. “Jesus. Just lie down.”
He is trying not to be a burden, so he follows Dean’s instructions. He pulls back the covers and slides under them, pulls them up to his chin obediently. He shifts onto his side and watches as Dean changes out of his jacket and jeans and boots and into clothes like the ones he gave Cas. He has watched a lot of television, recently, but he still hasn’t found anything as interesting to watch as Dean. He’s moving more slowly right now than he usually does, though. He’s moving as though he’s exhausted, as though he used up all of his energy helping Cas and doesn’t have any left for himself. Cas watches, and he thinks, I’m sorry.
Dean finishes changing. He turns to look down at Cas. He hesitates, and Cas is wondering if this is finally the part where Dean tells him to get out. Instead, he says, “I’m gonna lay next to you, okay?”
Cas is not in any position to be telling Dean what to do. He says, “It’s your bed.”
“That’s not--” Dean starts, then stops. He sighs. He drags both hands through his hair, closes his eyes. “Okay,” he says, softly, as though to himself. “Okay.”
Dean walks around the bed, turns off the light, settles onto the other side of the mattress. The memory foam makes it so Cas can hardly feel Dean lying there on the bed next to him. The only way he knows Dean is still there is by the sound of his breathing, so quiet that Cas has to strain to hear it. So quiet that all of this may as well be happening to someone else.
Cas wakes suddenly, and it is as though all of his senses start coming back to him at once, like he is finally experiencing them firsthand again instead of watching them happen to someone on TV. He can feel Dean’s memory foam mattress underneath him, the way it dips under his weight, molds itself around his body. He can feel the fabric of Dean’s clothes soft against his skin, can smell Dean everywhere, in the fabric and the blankets and the air. He can feel Dean pressed against his back, his arm thrown over Cas’ waist, his measured breath warm against the back of Cas’ neck.
It’s too much. He is trying to work out what it means and coming up with only one answer. But this isn’t a TV show where everyone gets a happy ending. He must be mistaken. It can’t mean what he wants it to mean. He is terrified of it meaning anything else.
There’s something building in his chest that he doesn’t recognize. It’s been so long since he has felt anything like this. Maybe he has never felt quite like this before.
Cas’ breath catches, over and over, like in his absence his body has forgotten how to breathe, too.
Dean inhales deeply behind Cas as he shifts to consciousness, and then there is Dean’s voice so close to him, there is Dean saying, “Cas? You all right?” There is unmistakeable concern laced through every word. Cas doesn’t know how to respond.
“Hey,” Dean says, and then he’s pulling away, and before Cas has time to be afraid, Dean is touching his arm, gently urging Cas to roll over and face him.
Cas dares to look at him. His vision is blurry, but it feels clearer than it has in months. He can see that the concern on Dean’s face matches the concern in his voice.
Dean settles back down next to him, their faces inches apart on the pillow. He slides an arm under and around Cas’ waist, pulling him close, and lifts the other to his face. He brushes Cas’ hair away from his forehead. He brushes his thumb under Cas’ eye, across his cheekbone.
“You’re crying,” Dean says.
Cas reaches his hand up, places it over Dean’s where it still rests on the side of his face. “I’m okay,” Cas says.
Dean frowns. Concerned, not angry. “You sure?”
Cas thinks about it. He thinks about Dean coming for him, Dean bringing him home, Dean inviting him into his room. Dean’s hand on his face, Dean’s legs tangled with his own. He nods.
“Okay,” Dean says. “I’m glad.”
Dean shifts again, moves even closer so that their foreheads are pressed together. He has his eyes closed. He’s smiling, ever so slightly. He adds, “I’m glad you’re here.”
Cas feels the static clearing.

Summary
This thing, tentative and unacknowledged between them for so long, is precious nonetheless and his heart twists at the allusion falling obscene from Lucifer's lips. He looks away, sickened. Lucifer's probably lying. He can't think about what it means if he isn't; it would be too cruel, after all this time, to hear the truth of it from anyone other than Cas.

Summary
Because he doesn’t give a rat’s ass any more, it’s easy for Dean to admit to himself that it’s all about Cas.
Cas, who had raised him from Hell. Cas, who was always so honest, so open, so earnest and true. Cas, who he’d loved. And, yeah, he’s chilled enough that ‘love’ is a word he uses now. Because why the hell not? He’d loved that nerdy freakin’ angel, loved him like a brother, like a comrade, like a ... whatever. And he’d trusted him with his life – more importantly, he’d trusted him with Sam’s life. He’d put his faith in him and the bastard— The treacherous bastard had—
Damn, but he’s hungry.
