Summary
Rumi, Zoey and Mira are vampire hunters, it's satisfying but hard work to keep people safe. However, the arrival of a Vampire Lord and his Knights bodes ill for the girls.

"Mir? You okay?" The voice soothed some of the irritation building in her and she turned to one of her trusted partners and fellow vampire hunter, Zoey.
"Yeah, it's just strange. There's been so many more vampires popping up all over the place recently, it seems every night we have to go out on patrol." She rubbed her gritty eyes, the vampire ash doing nothing but sucking out more moisture from them. "I feel like I haven't had a full night's sleep in months."
Zoey gave her a knowing grin, clapping a hand on her shoulder. "Considering the noises I hear from your room, I would imagine so." Mira's eyes slid in her direction, unamused, or trying to be.
"Ah, is that envy I hear in your voice?" Her eyes narrowed slightly, a small smirk curving her lips as she shifted to fully face the smaller woman.

“Who’s your favorite god?”
Mira swallows, savoring the broth on her lips. She doesn’t miss the way Zoey’s eyes flit down, and she has to bite her lip to keep from smirking. Zoey’s ears go red.
“Honestly? I’m not that familiar with them,” she digs back in, “Who’s yours?”
Zoey places the plastic cup on the ground, chopsticks set across the lid.
“It’s a little cheesy, but uh,” she huffs, “Rumi…”
“She’s the, uh,” Mira taps the lid of her own cup with her chopsticks, “The angel one, right? With the gak-gung?”
Zoey nods eagerly, looking a little surprised.
“She’s the goddess of love, but also a hunter and protector deity.” It comes out matter-of-factly.
Mira slurps and swallows.
“Hm. Greedy. I thought gods only embodied one thing.”
“Well, when people talk about her they usually only focus on the whole love factor - same with the other gods, to be honest - but she’s also a guardian who hunts down demons and keeps the city safe.”
“Whole lotta good she’s done,” Mira swallows the last of her noodles, setting her cup down next to Zoey’s, “How’s your eye, by the way?” She snarks.

When Rumi gets the chance to make amends with her childhood best-friend-turned-rival, Zoey, she jumps at it with both hands. If the intimidating Lieutenant Mira Kang is part of that deal, well, Rumi can live with that. Especially when Kang's got a plan that Rumi thinks could turn this whole damn system on its head.
But as Rumi knows all too well, good things don't last. Zoey and Mira aren't out to change the world; they're out to save Rumi.
Rumi has no interest in being saved, if she can't bring her people with her. She'll die down here in the dirt before she leaves them behind.
Mira and Zoey won't stop fighting for her. Rumi can't bring herself to do the right thing, and step away. How far can she push it before it all goes up in flames and she loses them both, all over again? Can she even keep them alive, when a crueller eye than they understand turns its gaze upon them?
The game's about to start, take your places please. There's no such thing as winning, in the end.

“Ugh,” Zoey whined, dragging her hands down her face. “I know we can’t just make her talk. But we both know what she wants to talk about, so it feels like we should be able to.”
Mira placed her hand onto Zoey’s abdomen, dragging her nails along the skin with the perfect amount of pressure. “I know you know that. But if she can’t even tell us, there’s no way she’d be able to follow through with actually doing it. Even if we’d all feel so much better if she just smashed our faces into the ground.”
“Why can’t we just phrase it like that?” Zoey complained. “Hey, Rumi. You remember the most traumatic night of your life? Why don’t we just recreate it and have it end by you going apeshit on us so we can all move on?”
Or, Zoey and Mira find Rumi's demon intensely attractive and decide to ask her to invite it out while they play.

Summary
The footsteps draw closer to Rumi. The zombies are just in front of her now – she can sense them. Gripping her gun tightly, she rises from behind the counter, her finger hovering on the trigger.
She freezes when she’s met with the sight before her. When she meets the wide, panicked eyes of two young women her own age, one with hot-pink hair and cutting cheekbones, the other with black hair and a heart-shaped face.
At once, all the fight drains out of her.
Rumi lowers her gun.
Or, in which Rumi, Mira, and Zoey fall in love during a zombie apocalypse. In which they find each other at the end of the world.
