In the nearest, deepest tidepool, the ocean so close that every other wave splashes into it before pulling back, there is a person .
Only, with the weak sunlight just beginning to press into the sky, a single line of muddled yellow that teases illumination, is Pete able to see that it's not exactly a person at all. Sure, there are arms, a chest, a head, all pale skin slick with water as another wave rushes into the pool, there's even blond hair and a pair of eyes watching him, but there's so much more than that. It has Pete floored, his pulse climbing into the back of his throat as he's unable to blink.

Still, it's well-known around the base, well known to Maverick, that Ice doesn't go around with flashy spells or doing party tricks.

August 5th Prompt: Color
"We're old," he comments, but there's no disdain, no indignation. Tom is actually… he's ridiculously happy. His chest feels tight with the emotion.
They are old, but more importantly than that, they're here, in a house they own under both their names, matching wedding bands now clinking against each other as Tom tangles their fingers on top of the counter, together regardless of the hardships they'd faced, after all these years.

Summary
It seems like there should be a very neat line, at least for humans, between dead and not dead, but I’ve seen enough messy half-alive humans to know that there is no such clear distinction. I’ve seen bodies that were still breathing despite missing part of their heads, bodies that weren’t breathing despite their owners being fully conscious. I wouldn’t call either option alive. I wouldn’t call either option dead, either.
For a machine intelligence, the border is even blurrier. It's hard to say which side of it I will stand on when they're through with me.

Mechanical technopaths didn’t often make it to high ranks in the military. Pete knew that, and he didn’t much care. He wanted to fly the planes. He didn’t want to be an admiral or whatever. That sounded boring as hell. It turned out it was like that for every MT. Whatever machine they preferred to interface with, an MT couldn’t be happy, sometimes couldn’t survive without regular access to it.
There was another reason that MT’s didn’t make high ranks, though, something that they didn’t tell you, something that you learned on the very first day when they brought you into the Tech Pits for your intake screening and health assessment.

In no particular order—Maverick receives a call from someone he hasn't seen in a while, thinks about family, and watches the sun set over the curvature of the earth in the fastest manned air-breathing jet engine aircraft in history.

Stepping up on his toes, Maverick throws the scarf around the back of Ice’s neck, wrapping it snugly around and making sure the ends are even on both sides of Ice’s chest. Mav’s hands briefly brush over Ice’s jawline, and they’re so warm it makes him dizzy.
To make matters worse, Maverick then shucks off his bomber jacket, throwing it over Ice’s shoulders and bringing it close to his chest. The inside of the jacket is toasty, and it smells like Mav.
“Are you sure?” Is all Ice can say.
Mav smiles up at him, the snow decorating his dark hair like glitter. “Of course. It looks good on you anyways.” He says, with an indecipherable wink.
AKA, Ice and Mav get caught in a blizzard on their way to Slider's for Christmas. Ice tries to deal with his feelings for Mav while trying not to freeze to death.

‘ASKING, TELLING,’ emblazoned across the front of the glossy magazine cover is the first thing that catches Maverick’s attention. When he processes the rest of the cover, bordered by that distinctive red frame, his heart freezes in his chest and his vision swims.
“Shit, Pete-” Ice’s voice is distant, second to the tunnel vision as he feels his ass hit the edge of the countertop behind him. He’s aware of the other man grabbing his shoulders, steadying him, but he can’t pull his eyes from the image on the cover.
It’s him- undeniably so. But more than that, it’s Ice.

In the wake of the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Ice and Maverick are unwittingly outed. Ice, master tactician that he is, knows an opportunity when he sees one.

Once the Daggers have all murmured agreements, Mav turns his head to look at Ice. "You ready, Ice?"
"Let's do this, Mav," Ice replies.
"What the fuck?" comes Jake's voice first, followed by Bob’s, "is that Admiral Kazansky?"
"Fight’s on," Mav calls before anyone can say anything else. "Let's turn and burn, baby!"Mav challenges the Daggers to a dog-fight against him and his wingman. Only - he doesn't tell them who his wingman is going to be, and it isn't until they're in the air that they realise the legend the Iceman is there with them.
