"You're going to ruin me," he texted her at 4:03AM on a Saturday evening. Rhaenyra could swear she heard the desperate cadence of his voice echo around the dark confines of her room. She stared at the New York skyline for what felt like an eternity, fingers resting on her thighs. She dug her nails in, ever so lightly. Attempted to ground herself.
The silence stretched on. Not uncomfortably. Fingers trembling, she took a short breath in.
"Good," she texted back. Tossed her phone halfway across the room, it landed softly on the carpet. Her cheeks heated. A phrase she learned in Latin earlier that week resurfaced in her mind:
"Medio tutissimus ibis - you will go most safely in the middle."
Neither of them had ever been good at safe. Or finding a middle ground.

This time, there was no attempt at a childish refusal, just a flat out disregard to his command. “I want a kiss,” she whispered, rocking her hips back, wriggling about in an attempt to break free, or perhaps to rile him up. Daemon had to bite the inside of his mouth to refrain from showing her just how well that was working. “I want a kiss, uncle,” she reiterated. “Please. Please.”
Sliding his hand forward, Daemon pressed his thumb against her bottom lip, pushing down until she fell silent. “Tell me what Mysaria says to me.”

Summary
The time he spent on the Stepstones made him forget how dull Viserys and his court were. Daemon was gone for eight years, yet the Red Keep has not changed at all in that time. He notices it as soon as he returns. Viserys has grown fatter, yet he’s still the same oblivious fool who wants to please every grasping lord and scheming lady. Every day, a feast or banquet is hosted to entertain the pompous lords and empty the Crown’s coffers, and merely a sennight after his return, Daemon is dying of boredom.
There is only a single bright spot amidst the crowds of droning lords and ladies draped in ridiculous garments. Viserys’ daughter and Daemon’s niece – Rhaenyra.

“I just wanted to come home.” Daemon shifts uncomfortably. “I didn’t think I needed a reason.”
Rhaenyra has always been able to tell when Daemon is lying, or avoiding, or otherwise full of shit. Even now, this is one of the few things that hasn’t changed. He can tell that she wants to push him to admit things he’s never wanted to say aloud—that he was lonely, that he hates being alone, that he is pathetic enough to submit to Viserys’s constant disapproval if it means not being alone, or, even more pathetically, that he feels less alone than he ever has in his life when he’s with her.
“You never tell anyone what you’re thinking,” she says. “It’s always just go, go, go, and you never stop to explain why.”
