Psychomanteum, noun. A dimly-lit room containing a comfortable chair and a mirror angled so that it reflects only darkness, intended to communicate with spirits of the dead.
It is our privilege to welcome you back, one and all, for the Summer 2024 season at the London Athenaeum. As some of you will no doubt be aware, this past winter saw a spate of minor thefts, with one enterprising thief successfully removing a marble bust of the goddess Carpundia. We are pleased to report that the probate court proceedings are now complete, and all of the stolen artifacts have been returned to us. For safety reasons, we must now ask that all rosaries, japa mala, ojuzu, komboskini, misbaha and other similar prayer beads are left at the door and collected upon exit on account of one of our new acquisitions, a devil vitrified in a prism of glass, and the multiple recent incidents of attempted strangulation.
We are proud to present a slate of all new exhibitions and events, including the crown jewel of this season: an exhibition on the 170 year history of the Athenaeum itself by acting head curator Edwin Payne. This is the distillation of an extraordinary life’s work, and one not to be missed.

Summary
An encounter with an enchanted puzzle box locks up most of Charles’ memories and leaves him thinking he and Edwin are in love. With a recipe from Tragic Mick for a potion to counteract the spell and strict instructions to go along with Charles' delusions, all Edwin has to do is keep up the ruse for three days. He can make it three days. Right?

Summary
When a witch’s spell sends Edwin back in time to 1973, he has to learn the hard way that you cannot change the past.
You can, however, fill it with love.

He finds Charles in the lounge, strapped into a bouncing chair whilst his mother naps on the sofa. Charles is wide awake, burbling happily as he sucks on a toy, a mop of fine curls already sprouting from his head. His eyes dart around the room and when they land on Edwin, they linger, and he pulls the toy from his mouth and smiles.
Edwin has never been fond of babies, but Charles is the exception to the rule. The smile on his face is not nearly as charming as the one that has Edwin weak at the knees, but it is adorable in a different way entirely.
Charles babbles a stream of nonsense and then throws his toy towards Edwin. It lands on the floor between them and Charles’s face crumples when he realises that it is no longer in reach. Edwin does not think. He steps forward and picks up the toy, crouching down before Charles to press it into his tiny hand.
He does not take it. Instead, his hands reach up to pat at Edwin’s face.

Even Charles can appreciate the subtleties of the choreography: Fire is boisterous, with great, choppy gestures, Water is in a blue outfit and flows gracefully, Earth stays close to the ground, with sure, stompy movements. It's Air, though, that captivates Charles’s attention: the boy is tall and graceful and pale, and seems to float, his feet barely touching the ground, showcasing astonishing feats of skill and athleticism. He spins and jumps so high, it seems as if he has wings.

“So, what do you study at HFA?” Before the other boy can answer, Charles puts a hand on his shoulder. “No, wait, let me guess.” He puts a finger on his lips to think. “You don’t look like a sporty chap. No offense. And you’re taking your A-levels a year early, which means you got some brains inside that head of yours. You read. Very old books.”
“Sherlock Holmes is a classic!” Edwin looks offended.
“So… You’re definitely in the Humanities.” Charles turns with a smile for approval. “Am I right?”
“That is still sixteen different specialities.”
“Yeah, and I don’t know them all, so you’re gonna have to tell me, now."

When Edwin gets bullied in front of them, Charles takes it upon himself to include him into their group. Or: Charles Rowland is sacrificed in the same ritual that killed Edwin Payne, seventy-three years earlier, only a short time before Edwin would have made it out of Hell on his own. Now, instead of being responsible for only himself, Edwin's got to get the both of them out of Hell. It's not going to be easy.

Charles Rowland's first impression of Edwin Payne can be summerized as privileged, rich and aloof – also incredibly pretty, but that’s besides the point. However, when Edwin presents him with a scheme to piss off his conservative parents and get some money out of them in the process, Charles can’t resist the siren call of causing mayham for some Tories.

Edwin’s shoulders tense. “The whole thing is bloody tragic enough as it is.”
Grabbing his wrist, Charles begins marching them back in the direction of the pond they used to get here.
