After letting the dead silence sit for a few moments, Emmeline clapped her hands together. “Well then, onto the boys!” Once again she made her way to the bowl and fished around within it for a few moments.
When she had finally clawed one out, she made her way back to the mic. Emmeline again took her time ripping open the ballot, and then the words Lily had been fearing since she was 13 were being amplified across the crowd.
“Joining Mary Macdonald, our male tribute from District 12 will be Remus Lupin!” Emmeline exclaimed, and Lily felt all the air rush out of her lungs. She felt like she’d been dunked underwater and was being violently spun around at the same time.
She thought of how sickly Remus was, catching every stray illness that Lily managed to avoid. She thought of his limp, and how in the arena he’d never be able to use a walking stick. How he’d be prey to everyone else.
She felt sick. Without thinking she began to push her way forward, and the girls around her parted to let her through, some giving her sympathetic looks. After all, everyone knew that Remus and Lily were a pair.

Chloe didn’t bother to hide her impatience as Warren pulled Max away for a photo. They didn’t have time for this. Rachel was dead and Nathan was going to pay. As soon as the camera flashed, Chloe turned away.
“We’ve got no time for this shit. Come on Max.” Before she could move, Max threw herself at her. “Chloe!” Startled, Chloe stumbled back a step before returning the hug. “Jesus dude.. what is up with you?”
Max stepped back from Chloe, but kept her hands on her arms. “I’m just- just glad we’re together.” Behind them, Warren had a hurt look on his face. “Guess you need to talk. No worries… it’s all good.” Any other time, Chloe would have made a scathing comment about how they weren’t worried, but she was too focused on Max.
“I’m glad you’re with me too.. What’s going on Max?"

Will raises his eyebrows. “Is that why you came in here?” he repeats, looking back down at the blue flannel. “To ask me about the weather in Lenora?”
“Kind of,” Mike says, and then, “well no, not about the weather specifically. I just– I wanted to talk to you.”
“Oh.” And Will looks a lot more surprised at this, actually, than the idea that Mike might have just wanted to come to his room to make small talk about unseasonably frigid California winters. “Okay. What about?”
“Anything.” The response is embarrassingly immediate. “Everything. I don’t know. I missed you.”
Hawkins, 1986. The world is ending, there are too many people in Mike's house, and to top it all off, he and Will have some things to talk through.

Summary
Mike's life is split in three categories; the life he should have, the life he wants to have, and the life he has to have. Currently, he's living in limbo between all three; he'll never have that white-picket fence and suburban wife, not when the only girl he could try to love has left him, and while he's finding it harder to live the life he has to have— the life where he hides himself so deep, not even the people he loves know who he is— he'll never get the life he wants, either.
Limbo sucks, to put it simply. He's so close to what he wants (which is Will, no matter how hard he tries to shove it down) but he just can't push past that barrier and talk to Will, not when everything he does always feels wrong.
But, maybe, Mike might come to learn that what he wants isn’t so bad, after all.
(Or; Mike's struggle with his internalized homophobia— among other things, including the concept of free will, Robin Buckley's mildly terrifying presence, and wanting things Mike's sure he doesn't deserve— structured around the five stages of grief. You can mourn a life you'll never live, and you can mourn someone you haven't actually lost.)

Summary
In the end, it doesn’t matter. None of it fucking matters. Because what’s really in control is the tension. This elusive string tied between their chests that’s always changing length. Right now it’s so short and taught and strong that Will can’t imagine resisting it. So really, it was never a matter of if he would. Just when. When will he fold? When will he let go and let himself follow Mike into the water?
He dares to glance down at his knees, where he can see Mike’s fingers peeking out from behind his calves (as if he needed that visual reminder that they’re touching), and then back up to meet Mike’s expectant gaze.
He’s going to do it. He’s such a fucking idiot.
OR
Mike & Will have a long overdue conversation on the way back to Hawkins— by, in, and around a random motel pool.

Summary
