Summary
Yaldabaoth decides to rig the game in an entirely different way, and the Phantom Thieves are created without Joker. Meanwhile, Ren Amamiya, who has been inexplicably turned into a ghost, decides to help out the strange and slightly unhinged detective Akechi Goro.
(I would rate this around T/M. There shouldn't be anything that is worse than canon.)

Summary
On the other side is a large throne, wrought from gold and iron. Seated in it is Akechi’s shadow. He has long hair, hanging low beyond his shoulders, and is dressed in a black military uniform, swirls of leaves and branches embroidered in gold beads sweeping across it. A saber sits across his lap. He looks so calm as Ren is brought before him.
There’s careful analysis in his eyes, as he looks over Ren. He stands and moves closer. The shadow pulls Ren’s hair so he’s looking at it right in the eye. It’s strange seeing those golden eyes instead of Akechi’s wine-red ones. It makes his face look more menacing, makes his canines look sharper. He’s as beautiful as ever but feral in a way Ren didn’t think possible.
“Why did you come here, Ren?” The shadow asks. Ren feels a small thrill go through him at the sound of his given name on Akechi’s lips. He’s never said it once. “Did you think you could fight me alone? I think you’ve underestimated me.”
Ren accidentally falls into Akechi's palace without any way of escape.

“So I’m to be bait,” Akechi says flatly. “You’re serving me up.”
Ren can feel the grin on his face, and he can’t stop it. “I gotta open the store tomorrow, I only serve coffee.”
“Absolutely idiotic. Why would I agree to that?"
Ren shrugs one shoulder and leans back against the movie theater wall, smiling. He’s feeling light on his feet right now. It’s been a bad day, but the end is nice. “Call it penance.”
“Penance for what,” Akechi says.
His smile stays where it is as he glances away for a moment, then meets Akechi’s eyes again. “Being yourself.”

Summer vacation back in Tokyo was supposed to be two things: an exciting break from the mundanity of home, and a chance to see people he's missed so much it hurts. If he survives, Ren has good news for himself on both.
