The year when many 'supervillains' made their rise— almost laughable individuals now.
At least, thanks to the superheroes that took their place.
The 2028 massacre ended as quickly as it started.
And nine years later, you were hired!No, no, no. Not as a superhero.
That would be quite dumb considering the not-so-amazing ability you happen to possess. Or the one you lack.Nah. You work behind the scenes.
You handle the paperwork.
You handle the cleaning.
You handle the maintenance.
The odd jobs.
The accounting.
The running back and forth through the hallways.
Y'know. All the fun stuff.All jokes aside, it isn't too bad once you get the hang of it. It's good pay, rewarding work, and the people are pretty nice.
Which is good for you.

Scar opened his eyes to . . . nothing. That was strange; he was certain he'd felt the twitch of his eyelids as they opened, knew that he was standing up and moving through . . . Wait, was he even moving right now?
Vision came back to him like a lacy curtain being slowly drawn back. The blackness went fuzzy, turned grey at the centre, and then slowly peeled itself away. Scar was left staring at darkness again, but this time the darkness was that of a dimly lit area.
He could see the walls of an unfamiliar building, random pieces of furniture: an armchair here, a dresser there, a switched-off lamp on a table—he must be in a house or apartment or something. There was carpet under his feet that were walking him through the building—he couldn't feel himself walking. Why couldn't he feel himself walking?

“NO!” Grian cried, pulling the key out of his car, engine going silent after the series of disconcerting clicks and clunks.
He groaned in despair, resting his head against his hands on the steering wheel.
“...What happened?” Scar asked.
“Battery’s dead. I’ve been ignoring it for so long, I guess I forgot that I needed it replaced,” Grian replied.
“I can’t get home, all the buses have left, Mumbo left, and the storm is too bad for any mechanics to come.” From every angle, he was screwed.
“...Do you want to stay at my apartment?” Scar offered nervously.
Grian’s head snapped towards him, hoping the wave of relief he felt wasn’t too obvious. Or the blush he could feel creeping along his face.
“If you’re sure you don’t mind?”

OR: Grian is a cashier who hates his job, and Scar is the pet supply shop owner who comes to the store every single night. When Grian's car won’t start in the middle of a bad snowstorm, Scar lets him stay at his apartment.

Summary
It was close to an hour after 8 P.M - prime time for scavenging - and the town was quiet and isolated, as of yet blissfully empty. The tiny corner store had graciously given him (or well, allowed him to freely steal, which was much of the same thing nowadays) some resources, and Grian was busy looking in that nasty space underneath the counter nobody thinks to check when the cat interrupted him.
Quickly shoving the odd cherry lollipop and two cereal bars he found into his pocket, leaving behind cigarettes butts and loose change, he looked up to the furry animal worming its way through fallen shelves and broken glass.
It didn't look like it had got rabies, but it never hurt to look twice. Careful had become everyone's second name, when the world had started to stop working as it should. (Nevermind that there were so few cats and dogs left the virus was probably all the way up to extinction.)
It walked close to him, expertly dodging the debris littering the floor, with an agility that left no doubt to its cognitive ability.
Grian had found himself a cat, in the middle of the goddamn apocalypse.

When Grian blinked awake, a pair of red eyes staring right at him was certainly not what he was expecting to see.
With an embarrassingly high-pitched shriek, Grian jolted backwards, his limbs flailing all about. His heart was going a million miles a minute, thumping painfully in his chest. Scar, who had been wrapped around him, let out a matching yelp as he was yanked out of sleep.
The source of the eyes–Mumbo–just sat there, gaze unmoving and steady. The vampire was hunched over, his impeccable suit and face splattered with something crimson. Mumbo tilted his head to one side, his pupils blown large. A red glow was pulsating in his eyes steadily, and when he opened his mouth to give Grian a grin, blood gleamed on his sharp fangs.

“Do everyone a favor and set the sun, would you?” A finger pokes his cheek, prodding and sinking into his skin.
One beat passes. Two. Three. Then four and five and six.
The other shifts, grass laced with drops of dew furling beneath their shoes. “I know you aren’t really asleep.”
Grian sighs and one narrow eye cracks open. There are three things that instantly draw his attention. First, the glare of light beaming down, radiant as it breaches over the horizon and sways and dances in the clear sky, void of any clouds. The second, bundles of ripe, nitid plums brim with sweet nectar dangle scattered across sturdy tree branches. Its leaves are stained emerald and verdun and moss green. So thin one could view through the chartreuse-tinted lenses if they so wished to. The third, his sister, Pearl staring down at him, head parallel to his. Long, ash-brown hair falls gracefully on either side of his head.
Or: Three times Grian and Pearl nearly reveal their godly status and successfully keep it hidden from Hermitcraft. One time they almost fail (and are forced to take drastic measures.)

“I’m the only person I’ve ever known to not have a bond,” Grian confirmed, and Scar only seemed amazed by this, gaping with a small smile tugging at his lips. His countenance was a lot different to how it had been prior, something easier, as if a huge weight had been lifted off of his shoulders. “Now, that makes two of us.”
“Do you ever wish you had one?” Scar asked, and Grian couldn’t help but think it an odd question from Mr. I've always hated the idea that fate decides who I love. But it was a question he had an answer to.
“I don’t think I ever got the chance to wish for one, I accepted my own fate before I got to wonder what another would be like.”

Or, Grian is the only person who can see soul strings, and Scar comes to him to get his own removed (spoiler alert: it's a lot more complicated than he thought)

The ghost only winced slightly, brushing off his shoulder where it had landed. “I’ll give you some credit, that hurt a lot more than the last guy’s.”
“You— what—?”
With that, the ghost landed on his feet and stepped the few steps to close the gap, hands clasped behind his back as he looked up at Scar, eyes critical as they studied him. There was something almost bird-like in the way he tilted his head, in the way he slowly blinked, in the way he held himself. It was fascinating. “Let me make this a little easier for you— I’m Grian. I’m not where I’m supposed to be, and there’s no getting rid of me. So either leave or get used to it.”
