Summary
“Alright,” Nancy says, and then, unthinkingly, she adds, “It’s a date, then.”
The other line goes abruptly silent.
Nancy frowns. “Steve? Are you okay?”
She hears him clear his throat. “Yeah, I’m here. I’m great. I’m — I’ll see you and Jonathan Friday?”
And later, much later, Nancy will look back and realize that this is the moment where she should’ve put it together. But she doesn’t. Instead, she says, “Great. We’ll pick you up at six. Sound good?”
“Yeah,” Steve says, his voice quiet and careful. “That sounds great, actually.”

Summary
“Do you think it’s weird that you two never, like…I don’t know. Became friends?” Robin asks.
Steve blinks. “Me and Jonathan?”
“Yeah,” Robin says. “I mean, didn’t you guys beat up a Demogorgon with Nance that one time? It feels like that kind of experience would forge a bond, you know? Like, it would transcend all the love triangle drama, or something.”
Or: when Nancy breaks things off with Steve and Jonathan and goes to college, Steve accidentally becomes friends with Jonathan.
Just friends, though. Obviously. Anything other than that would be weird.

Summary
Having lived his entire life in a small town obsessed with Christmas, Jonathan has grown to resent the holiday. It doesn't help that the influx of visiting tourists staying at the Byers Bed & Breakfast for the season makes it their busiest time of year. When Nancy Wheeler arrives feeling disappointed her boyfriend is stuck in New York for their vacation, Jonathan offers to keep her company while she does all the touristy stuff. It's only supposed to be a friendly favor, but the more time they spend together, the easier it is for Jonathan to fall for her. Is it so crazy to think Nancy would be happier with him than she is with her asshole big-city boyfriend who couldn't be bothered to spend Christmas with his girlfriend?
But then Steve Harrington finally shows up, and Jonathan realizes he might've been wrong. Not only does Steve not seem like the asshole Jonathan thought he was, but he and Nancy actually look happy together. Obviously, it's time for Jonathan to face the fact that his feelings are unrequited and move on.
It'd be easier to do, probably, if Steve and Nancy would stop inviting Jonathan along on their dates.

Summary
“Just because you can’t see a ghost doesn’t mean it isn’t real,” Robin says. “There are plenty of things we can’t see that are real.”
Jonathan raises his eyebrows. “Name one.”
“Uh, fucking gravity?” Steve says.
“Yeah, I can drop an apple,” Jonathan deadpans.
Nancy clears her throat. “Is this an important conversation, or can we get back to the ghosts now?”
Or: a ghost files AU featuring non-linear timeline angst, the investigation of an abandoned ghost town, the art of convincing yourself you aren’t in love with your already dating best friends, and — possibly — proof that ghosts do exist.
