Summary
“Hello, Thrawn,” Eli bids him, a smile shaping his lips, the heat he feels in his chest echoed in the curve of his mouth, the way his eyes resist the urge to gloss over with some amalgamation of emotion that demands to manifest in the precursor to tears.
He sees the subtle shift as Thrawn lowers his guard. He takes one step, another half dozen, and they clasp forearms, their fingers squeezing tightly. Eli leans in, his left arm comes up and around to brace Thrawn's back in the briefest, most professional version of an embrace he can offer: a compromise between Human sentimentality and Chiss stoicism.
Or, a story about finding something you hadn't realized you'd lost in the first place.

“We’re not sacrificing a virgin to the dragon,” Viktor said in exasperation.
“Well what would you do?!” the mayor demanded.
“I’m going to go talk to it,” Viktor said reasonably, and got up from his seat and went to do just that.

There was no corresponding glass to be seen; apparently, he’d been drinking from the bottle.
“Ah,” said Pellaeon dryly. “I’ve interrupted your nightcap.”

The Ascendancy is not as it once was. New leaders have ushered in an age of change. Around 13 ABY, the Syndicure approves a mission to the Wah'ahaunta Nebula to protect its capital planet Yalu from an impending Grysk attack. The Yalunese people have already removed themselves from Grysk influence several years earlier, aided by former Grand Admiral Mitth'raw'nuruodo and the remnants of his Imperial fleet.
Admiral Eli'van'to is sent as an emissary of the Ascendancy to protect the Yalunese people and establish relations with this potential gateway to Chiss space. But that is not his only mission. The Patriarch of House Mitth has also tasked him with righting wrongs that are decades overdue.
