Summary
Between her sons, Yusuf had been the fighter. He had been her bright star as a child, racing through the house, excited about everything he learned. He’d learned swordplay like it was a science; learned science like it was poetry; learned poetry like it was breathing. Ibrahim had been her steady pair of hands, hiding behind his brother when strangers knocked on the door, handing her spices while she cooked, always the voice of reason to back up his brother’s verses.
He leaves an empty, carved-out space in their home, and in his place, Yusuf has brought home a ghost.
OR: Yusuf's mother meets Nicky.

Summary
The thing about being a thousand years old was that years didn’t feel very long anymore; they were an over-produced commodity. The years of studying at al-Azhar wouldn’t feel like much at all to him now, but back then, they’d lasted centuries, and perhaps it was because all the time he spent without Nicky felt interminable, even before he’d known who it was he was missing. He’d carried with him a vague and inexplicable sense that he was waiting for something to begin, though he knew not what.
***
“I think I was in love with you before I knew you.”
Nicky laughed into the corner of Joe’s jaw, breath tickling his neck. After all these years, he’d memorized the shape of Nicky’s nose, the sensation of his stubble at every stage of unshavenness, absolutely every imaginable corner and contour of his body, and the more he knew it the more he loved it, like an old favorite song that developed new layers of meaning every time you listened. “Always the poet.”
“I really do think so, though,” Joe chuckled. “I die of love for you,” he said, switching to old Arabic, quoting Abū Nuwās. “And then I return to life so I can kiss you one more time,” he continued. His own words.

Summary
“Nicky brought the mustache style to Italy, you know,” Joe offers out of nowhere. He can nearly hear Andy’s eye roll. “I believe it was sometime in the early 1400s - wasn’t it?”
“Ah, yes,” Nicky says, with a sage nod. “You inspired me one morning, and I thought to shave off the bottom.”
“It was the eve before the Battle of San Romano, I believe, and not a man could take his eyes off of you the next day.”
“That explains why you died at least twice that day.”
“I am forever fixated on you.”
“You’re both kidding,” Nile says, “Right?”
“You should probably just sleep,” Andy advises. “They do this a lot.”-----
In which Nicky and Joe take liberties with recounting history, because it's fun.

Summary
“So,” Nile begins, sitting in the beat up Hyundai with some meatballs in her lap, still dressed in her running gear. “Sexiled, huh?”
Andy nods, chewing away at her own meatballs. She points at herself. “Professional third-wheel here.”
Nile nods. “Well, they’re in love.” She shrugs, and Andy raises an eyebrow at her. “What? Love makes you do stupid stuff.”
Nile experiences the whole world, learns some disgusting secrets, gains another set of parents—as well as a cranky vodka aunt—and learns what it means to be immortal.

Summary
This house is big and drafty, is another part of the problem, and Joe is an old, old man. An old man in a much younger man’s body, yes. Joe does not know the ache of arthritis. If he wanted to go run laps outside he could, and then he could keep busy for the remaining hours of the day with all of his youthful energy, his excellent circulation keeping him warm enough to go on, in reality. But he is feeling cold and weary down to his bones today. Nicky knows. Nicky understands. And Nicky is wearing two pairs of socks right now, because the cold bothers him more than it bothers Joe.
Joe can’t remember the last time they kissed, and that just won't do.

Summary
Breaking through the general chatter, the model called cheerfully, “Good afternoon, I’m Joseph, I’ll be your model for the day. I will be enacting a few different poses over the course of the class, I hope the muses are kind to you and I hope you are kind to me.”
“Depends on what you’re hiding under that robe,” a student called out.
Joseph only winked as he undid the belt of his robe. “The human body is never cause for shame,” he said, and let the robe fall to the floor.

Summary
“Nicolò,” Yusuf looks him straight in the eye, “I know this will change everything, and I am sorry, but you must know this: I love you.”
This declaration doesn’t bring the reaction Yusuf was expecting.
Nicolò’s brow remains twisted in confusion. “Well, yes. Of course. I know that.”
Yusuf sighs. This is going as terribly as it possibly could.
“No, Nico—” Yusuf holds Nicolò’s hands in his own, trying to convey the heaviness of his statement, “I’m in love with you.”
“Yes,” Nicolò says inexplicably impatient, “I am in love with you too. We are together, in every way. What does this change? I don’t understand.”

Summary
“You have a lovely mole,” Yusuf said. Nicolò didn’t catch his last word. He looked at him questioningly.
Yusuf tapped on his mole gently as he rinsed his blade. “Mole,” he repeated in Arabic.
“Mole,” said Nicolò in Zeneize. Then he tried to imitate the Arabic word.
Yusuf smiled at his effort. His dimples were showing. It felt like a discovery every time Nicolò saw them.
Nicolò didn’t know what possessed him when he reached out to touch that spot and said, “Dimple.” in Zeneize.
“Dimple,” repeated Yusuf and of course he did perfect the first time. He said the word back in Arabic. Nicolò tried to repeat it. By the way Yusuf smiled, it looked like he did a passable job.
Then it’s all over too quickly. Yusuf scooped some water and rinsed Nicolò’s face, then used his own shirt to dab it. “All done,” he said.
Then their eyes locked and something else, something that in hindsight felt inevitable, shifted.

Summary
“Today I met a boy who escaped al-Quds,” Yusuf says, and Nicolò stares back at him this time. His clean face is solemn, his pale eyes almost sad, and Yusuf wishes he could see some anger in them. Anything but this. “They killed his whole family.”
“When you say them,” Nicolò blinks, and there is a twitch in his strong jaw. “You mean me. My people.”
Yusuf feels he has been running his whole life.
He ran from his duties as the family’s heir when he refused to marry the woman chosen by his parents. Yusuf eventually made a new home in Jerusalem, and he thought he was done running. Then the Franks laid their siege and Yusuf was killed and brought back to life too many times. Before he realised, he was on the run again. Only this time, he is not alone.
Or; a road trip around the Mediterranean in which Yusuf struggles with his new life, searches for the women in his dreams and learns how to open his heart. Also, there is only one bed.

Summary
“And it didn’t bother you that the guard thought you were -- that we were -- ?” Nicolò asks, for what is definitely the fourth time, as they bed down, hopefully hidden from view by the reeds and trees of the Nile delta.
Yusuf sighs, rolling onto his back. “Do I mind that he thought I would be foolish enough to abandon all reason and take up with one of the men who helped sack Al-Quds? Yes, a little. Not enough to stop from using it as a perfectly serviceable escape route.”
“No,” Nicolò says, “I mean, that you would prefer the company of other men at all.”
Yusuf blinks, bemused. He hadn’t even thought of that. “As a rule, I try not to be insulted by accusations that are true,” he says drily.

That’s what struck him most of all. How obscene, how embarrassing a thing it was to be affected by, relative to all of his prior knowledge and experience. He didn’t think it was normal, was the thing, and that was the worst feeling of all, like he was depraved, somehow, and he had to find this out about himself when his tentative travelling companion went and said something nice to him, something that made his dick hard faster than he could process what the words even meant.
Or: Nicky has a thing for being praised, and Joe has always loved to spoil him.
