Shawn Spencer has been a psychic detective for almost twenty years now - most people either think he's pretending or they genuinely buy his act. The truth is a little somewhere in between. He can see ghosts, it's just... it turns out most people, even murder victims, don't bother to hang around after death, so it's not all that helpful for most cases.
It's helpful at other times, though, so when he and Gus get a chance to go to London (again) he finally decides to tell Gus the truth by way of introducing him to some ghosts who helped him on a case once. Edwin Payne would just like this very annoying man to leave his office, please.

When the cat king puts an enchanted collar on Charles that takes his voice away and can only be broken by Edwin kissing him, Charles isn't that worried. Edwin is in love with him, and Charles has feelings now too, although he's yet to tell Edwin that. So getting Edwin to kiss him will be easy. Right??

Charles bites his lip, searching for words. “And it means something to me that someone wanted to stop him. They got away with killing me thirty years ago. You’re not going to let them get away with doing that to me again, are you?”
Instead of submitting his confession for murdering Charles Rowland 35 years ago, Andrew Fairfax has to drag his soul out the lake of St. Hilarion with no memory of who exactly choked these bruises into his neck but he's got a list of suspects and a pretty good idea of their motives. It seems like he's going to need the help of a couple of detectives to connect the dots.
(Or: Charles is having a lot of feelings that he's definitely going to unpack later. Promise. Edwin goes a little bit insane and he's hiding it so, so well. Crystal sees some stuff she'd rather she didn't. And, honestly, Niko has had better weeks. )

Edwin smiled. It was funny how easily the sight of that smile eased the weight that had been sitting on his chest all day. It was like he was magic. Maybe he was. Charles had never believed in that kind of thing before, but if there was anything that could make him, it would be that soft smile on Edwin’s lips.
“I suppose as your newly appointed ‘best friend’,” Edwin said, a teasing lilt to his voice. “It is my duty to tell you to go home. I hate to say it, Charles, but you look horrible.”
Charles winced a little, but he still laughed. “Oh, fuck off. You don’t hate to say it. Humbling me is your favourite pastime.”

Everyone said DI Payne was difficult to work with, if not impossible. His lack of people skills was beaten only by his lack of a sleep schedule. At one point there had been a rumour going around that he was actually part-robot. That would explain why he was the youngest DI in half a century, and why he made inexperienced colleagues cry with his blunt manner.
He was an oddity. A bit of an in-joke.
But now, somehow, he had found himself a partner who seemed not only immune to his rudeness but quite taken with it. And so he and DS Charles Rowland had solved their missing person's case. They'd reunited Becky Aspen with her family and were now on the hunt for the serial killer that had kidnapped her. Even stranger than that- the DI had been caught smiling.
